Do nurses get unemployment benefits?

I was in a convo with someone about unemployment benefits and heard that nurses don't get unemployment benefits.. is this true?? Assuming that you got laid off or fired, and not resigned.

I think this is a myth, years ago if you lost one job you could pretty much find one the next day, we are living in a new era.

I am an LPN and I am currently collecting unemployment. I broke my ankle and needed 2 surgeries, my FMLA ran out and they would not extend it so as soon as the doctor told me I could go back to work I applied for unemployment and was approved.

Totally untrue. I know a nurse now who is currently receiving unemployment without a problem. Sometimes you cannot go on what people tell you (lol as I am giving you advice) but this nurse I know in NYS just claimed benefits last month and so far, will be receiving benefits for at least 6 months.

I collected unemployment for about 9 months when I couldn't find a job It was a life saver until I could gert a job. It also helped so I could find a job I wanted and not just grab one because I was desparate

I was granted unemployment for 12 weeks. The hospital where I was employed for 22 years would not allow me to return to work part-time after the untimely loss of two immediate family members. I was told if I did not return to full time status, I could not return at all. I applied for unemployment benefits, had a hearing, and won my case. I was so grateful; I had time to grieve, as well as search for employment, not having to take the first job that came along.

As another poster stated, times have changed. In the state where I live, nurses who are out of work d/t substance abuse are eligible to file for unemployment benefits. It is not always granted, but I know of several nurses who were fortunate enough to receive benefits. This gave them the opportunity to go to rehab, as well as prepare themselves to appear before the Board of Nursing Examiners.

Do not believe everything you hear!

Some states it is much more profitable, depending on how long you have worked and how much money you have made. As a Washington state unemployment recipient, I made $503 a week.

I SERIOUSLY AGREE with a pp about the waiting week thing though. My old state had a waiting week...DO NOT WAIT TO FILE!! Basically, file asap, even if you have already worked that week. The unemployment folks on the phone are usually pretty nice explaining it all but definitely do not get tricked by a "waiting week" :twocents:

Generally, here in Cali, laid off = unemployment... resigned or fired (i.e. terminated for cause) = no unemployment.

If your paid via W2 and are NOT terminated for cause.

99% you can collect unemployment.

Paid via 1099 is trickier as well as Corp-to-Corp.

Why would they not?

My DON was just complaining that she had to interview someone who said, "Well I am not really interested in the position but I have to interview for unemployment." :uhoh3: ...

WHAT? hahaha That is the first time i've heard such a thing ... the interviewee is so unprofessional

Now that's what I like, an honest person!

Recently it took me more than four months to get unemployment in CA, not counting the month I foolishly waited around for the employer to offer work. I had to interview three times because not one, but two, employers told blatant lies to get out of paying the unemployment benefits. Then one employer started offering me work here and there, enough to screw up my unemployment check, but not full time by a long shot; then a case in the bowels of the ghetto, two hour drive to and two hour drive from. The unemployment interviewer told me I could refuse such a job. I replied that I already have to deal with three interviews; another interview, and take the chance that the EDD would say I have to drive two hours into the ghetto to work? After all, the employer acknowledged when they offered me the ghetto job that they knew I did not accept jobs in the ghetto. They knew exactly what they were doing. I am looking for a new employer.

I'm a new nurse and I'm still in training by the hospital. I had to take a leave for health reasons and after the doctor cleared me to return to work I was promised to be put back on schedule. However, two weeks have passed and the head of HR keeps telling me that she will call me soon but she does not.

Do i qualify for unemployment and what recourse do I have.
