Delegating to PCAs

Do anyone have a problem delegating to the PCAs (nursing assistants) when they are older then you. The PCAs on my floor are always hard on the new nurses until they decide if they like you or not. Sometimes it makes it hard to work.

I think that's a negative way to look at it. Try asking a co-worker nicely for what you would like them to do instead of delegating it. It shouldn't matter anyone's age or title, we are the patients team and need to work together for the benefit of the patient.

They are there to there job, and your there to delegate to them.

I'm a new nurse and all of the nursing assistance are older than me and have been on the working there longer than me.

But it's about respect. If you can do something, do it. Don't expect them to do every little thing for you. Espically if they are busy. Or if it's something that can be done at anytime, just tell them to do when they have a chance. And always thank them. They can be a big help on busy shifts.

It's about working together. Understanding there role and how they help out. Not belittling them and ordering them around.

And they should do the same. Respect you and understand you need a hand, without complaining.
