Critical Care nurse residency in NC or SC

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a December '10 grad and I wanta SICU residency. I researched the AACN's list of residencies and I know Duke has a critical care program. I see Wake Med has residencies - Do they offer critical care? I have also searched UNC- Chapel Hill but can not find any current info on their program (if they still have one?).

I've called Pitt and was told I could apply now and be on wait list for December. They gave starting pay as $21/hr.

Wake Forrest Baptist has a program also. Anyone have info on that?

Does any one know the starting salaries for these programs. I see apprx $20 to $21 as a starting wage for most new grad jobs in NC.

Also, I see Carolinas Health System had created a new grad program. Do they hire into critical care areas? Pay?

I have researched salary.com and all the other sites but I don't think they reflect accurate new grad info.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I haven't ever heard of it being called a 'residency' before, but I was in the new nurse grad program at WakeMed. They called it the Nurse Fellows program. They have hired newgrads for positions in CCU in the last few years. It is very competitive for people trying to get into the CCU positions. If you are applying for a position there, it would be best to make an appearance in person and not just fill in the application on the website. At least talk to an HR person to see if you can follow an RN on the unit for a day or something. Do it as early as September, and make yourself memorable by submitting a pic with your resume. Best of luck to you!

I start the new grad residency program for carolinas healthcare system in a week. They have always hired new grads, but this new grad residency program is only for the critical care area. It's for new grads being hired to MICU, STICU, NICU, PCU, and the ICU float pool. I also heard they plan to add the ED into the program soon too, which will be awesome since its a level 1 trauma center and they currently dont hire new grads in the ED. Starting pay is about $20.

Thanks for the responses!:)
