Crazy on-call situations.....

The company that I worked for (LTC/SNF) also had 2 other facilities in town- we were competitors, but also helped when we could. The DON was the only RN in the 120-bed facility (and yes, it was SNF), so she was there all the time- every week day, after hours for MDSs, no weekends, nothing, and on call all the time-- she may sneak away to go home, but she was never 'off' (they were looking for other RNs - MDS and ADON, plus whatever else they could get- but small town- not a good demographic for employers). Needless to say, she was exhausted. I was asked if I'd take call for a weekend- wouldn't have to deal with staffing- they had their own system - just field the "RN" stuff... OK, no problem.....I felt bad for her- and had met her and liked her, so made me even more motivated to help her get out of there for a while. All she wanted to do is go home and turn off the phone for 2 days. Yeah- I'm in....

Friday- 5 pm... barely got home and the phone rings. They have a 'horrible problem".... Mr X wants to shack up with Ms Y, but Ms Y is an amputee, and can't really do the wild thing anywhere but her room- BUT she has a roommate- and is it legal for them to be doing the horizontal boogie in the facility (like if they went on some illicit field trip, all was peachy keen....sigh.

They were mortified when I told them that if they were both able to act on their own rights, and Ms Y's roomie could be kept busy for a while, to close the door, and turn up the radio. The floor nurses thought it had to be illegal. Nope- it's their home, not their cell. How were they going to 'do it' ? Don't know- not my business. Just be sure nobody falls out of bed!

I thought for sure the rest of the weekend was going to be the pits, since they started on the 'new' RN....but they didn't bug me about anything else- maybe thought I'd organize an orgy or something

LOL for being called for that situation but wow, I can't imagine being in that RNs shoes even for a short period of time.

The DON at my current facility was ADON at another local facility before she started where I am. She was telling me they used to call her day and night for everything and then they wouldn't even have any information gathered for her. For instance, they'd call and say Mr. So and So was short of breath. But they wouldn't have an O2 sat, set of vitals, lung sounds, history, etc. I just don't understand how nurses like that keep their jobs.

Well, also I don't understand the thought behind calling an ADON in the middle of the night when you have a pt. SOB. What about assessing the pt then calling the MD? What's the ADON going to do, give you permission to call the MD? Very odd systems in place in some of these facilities.

Why would you call the ADON for that...A. Use critical thinking, B. Call the doc if it's that bad and send 'em out

I can understand why they would call. Ms Y's room is her roommates home, too. Roomie shouldn't have to leave every time Ms Y wants to get it on.
