Courses to take while waiting for job opportunities?

Nurses General Nursing

I'm new Grad RN and I'm just wondering what courses should I take while waiting for job opportunities?.. Thanks

I'm a new(ish) grad too and have been taking FEMA's national incident response courses, ICS 100, NIMS 700 and 800. They're free but a little boring. Also some free CE courses that are available online, and studying for ACLS. Once I finish the ACLS book I plan to take a course and get certified. Just some stuff that are useful, occasionally interesting, and can be mentioned in an interview when asked what I've been doing since graduation.

Congrats on graduating and good luck.

What kind of nursing are you trying to get into?>

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

My cousin took a phlebotomy course while waiting to get into the nursing program - i thought that was a great idea and wished i had thought of that for right after nursing school

I'm taking Spanish, and I'd like to take ASL (American Sign Language) too at some point.

Well I was reading this magazine about Nursing stuff and It says here that the best area for the New Grad RN is Medical Surgical. Because it builds up the foundation and having that background will open the opportunity for the other Area. I guess I should start taking courses that is related to Medical Surgical. But what course or certificate should I get??

Actually I'm thinking of getting a certificate in Critical care, but it's too expensive, it's $600. Phlebotomy is only $90 , ACLS $200

California School of Health Sciences

SnuSnu - what ACLS book are you using?

Specializes in CT ICU, Med Surg.

**I'm a new grad too.. well I graudated in May anywhow. Anyways, I highly recommend ACLS and EKG; many of the positions I've been applying to in critical care and ED require it PRIOR to applying.

I'm also like michigansapphire, where I'm trying to learn spanish.. but it's hard.

Specializes in OB/GYN, Emergency.

Find something that you'll be able to apply to your career and that might open more opportunities for you. For example, if you like women's health, you could look into certifications in lactation consulting, sexual assault nurse examiner, or childbirth educator. It's a great time to learn more about the things you're interested in.
