Continuing Nursing Education

Hello My name is Jazmine and I am currently enrolled in a Licensed Practical Nursing Program. Eventually I would like to obtain my bachelors degree in nursing with a specialty in Neonatal. As far as continuing education from LPN to registered nurse, should I just go to a four year university, or should I bridge from LPN to ADN, and then from ADN to BSN?

It's great that you are already thinking ahead in terms of advancing your education. You choices will need to be based upon your own circumstances and programs available to you. For instance, if your LPN program is a 'college hour' program that requires pre-requisite courses, the transition to RN will be a bit easier because it is likely that you will have some courses that will transfer. If your current program is a 'clock hour' technical/vocational program, it will be more difficult (but not impossible) to get credit for some of your LPN education.

There are many different types of "bridge" options for LPNs who wish to obtain an ADN or BSN degree. The best way to find a list of those schools is to start with your state Board of Nursing - they will have a listing of all the schools and what types of programs they have. Most of the time, this list is available on the Board's website.

Many of us began our nursing careers as LV/PNs. It provides an excellent foundation for a long and successful career.
