Hello! I am a new nurse working part time in a nursing home right now and is looking for another job. I applied for a part time position in assisted living and shadowed a nurse for an hour. They asked me if I am still interested in the job. I am conflicted if is the best choice for my career path as they only do assessment and med pass. I want to work in labor and delivery but they require experience and don't know where to start. Do I stick in nursing home jobs right now and see in the future if I can explore other areas? Thank you for your answers!

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

If you want to be in L&D you should be applying for L&D internships. It is a difficult specialty to break into, particularly once you have experience that is not in women's health. Even an acute care job would get you closer to that specialty than LTACH or SNF.

Work where you need to in order to pay the bills, but you should be applying like crazy to hospital based positions.

SNF and Assisted living are not good paths to L&D. If I were in your shoes, I would consider moving to an "employee's market". If that were not possible and I couldn't get into L&D in my area, I would look for a mother/baby or med/surg position.
