Charge Nurse Pay

Nurses General Nursing

Published

We are looking at campaigning for a charge nurse differential and were wondering if anyone out there gets paid extra for being in charge and if so how much?

Thanks for your help

Celia

We take a full patient load and get 2.00/hour to charge.

We get $2.00 for the entire 12 hour shift and we take a full patient load. I work night shift on a pediatric floor.

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

we get 5% no patient load from 7-3, from 3-7 a limited amount of patients and 7p-7a a full patient load.

Specializes in Geriatrics, MS, ICU.

I heard it is only $.50 extra an hour.....Whoopie!

Two dollars an hour extra, lighter patient load.

44 bed acute medical floor in a community hospital, average census in the low 30s.

I think a bigger question is, what are the duties of a charge nurse? If our charge nurses took no patients, they'd sit around and twiddle their thumbs all day....there isn't THAT much for them to do.

I work nocs; our charge nurse makes shift assignments, places admits, and is in general a resource person. No huge amounts of responsibility, relative to some charge nurse positions. I mean, it is still a leadership position, and still an important position. But it's not as acute or difficult as some charge nurse positions, I think.

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

We get $2.50/hr extra for charge, and the same for precepting. The night shift charge nurse doesn't have an assignment, and days won't be taking one starting in a few weeks. Charge is rotated among experienced nurses on days and nights, usually while training another nurse how to do it.

We get 1.00 an hour/diff with a full patient load. I can remember way back when my manager asked me if I wanted to "train" for charge. I told him "No." A week later, I look at the schedule and suddenly I was in "charge." I had never been trained and had no clue as to what my duties were. What an absolute joke.

Not sure area you are working, but my area of work we, the full time resource nurse is paid 10% off base pay. Unfortunately, the fill in charge nurses are paid $1.50.

5% on the shifts you do charge

Specializes in ED/trauma.

$3 more per shift, & we take up to 4 patients, & we are a level 1 trauma center/ER-makes you wanna join right in huh?

Specializes in GI/GU surg,Pacu, ct surg, home care, NH.

$2.50 an hour for and not worth all the stress that comes with it. The most annoying thing is when your manager says "You are getting paid for it" . Oh please.

Specializes in PCU/tele.

we get $0.50/hr and plus take a full pt load (usually 6 pts) and are understaffed
