Anyone use the Arctic Sun on their unit?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone uses the arctic sun on their unit and has a hypothermia protocol? I am in the process of reworking ours and was interested in problems/issues/pt safety that others at other hospitals have encountered.

Pardon my ignorance but I never heard of the Arctic Sun before!

I cannot wait to see what replies that will come out of your question and I am very curious of the protocol you will come up with.

Would you consider e-mail it to me so I can have an opinion too?

Personally, I like to keep my patients cool. Specially if they are COPD pts, they breathe better when cool, if a patient tries to get out of the bed unassisted, I like to keep the room on the cool side too! So the pt has a tendency to curl up to stay warm bed!

This is a machine that our hospital uses to chemically induce hypothermia in patients who have cardiac arrested to help improve neurological outcomes.

I was a traveler at Columbia Neuro ICU (in NYC) last year and they very actively used it. You might call them and see if they can give you a copy of their protocol. They are really nice. I am having a brain moment and can't remember the manager's name!! Good luck!!;)

Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno ought to have a hypothermia protocol as well. They've used hypothermia to improve neuro outcomes in stroke patients and the nurse who was helping implement this intervention mentioned they're in the process of acquiring an Arctic Sun. Her name eludes me at the moment, though!

Hi Avery,

I am from cleveland OH at Cleveland Clinic/ Hillcrest Hospital and we are looking at the Arctic Sun for post arrest hypothermia. We are presently using Theromosuit. Any thoughts about the Arctic Sun you would like to share? Or if you can direct me to a resource
