just curious to see how many of you guys are smokers? i've (very) recently stopped after about 12 or 13 years of filling my body with the many impurities cigarettes have to offer and it was just for mine and my girlfriends health. BUT i've expereinced first hand over the last eight years people dying horrible deaths due to smoking related diseases and it never put me off, and still never realy did - it was just that i was out of puff climbing the stairs and thought " thats not right!!". so, how many of you guys are the same?????? still smoking / recently stopped / stopped since nursing??

I'm a nursing student and I smoke. Our upcoming clinicals will be 12 hours at a stretch in a non-smoking environment so I've bought nicotine lozenges to make it through. Quitting is no problem, but the longer I stay quit, the more depressed I get, and I get to the point where I think it's not worth living that extra 5 years or so. Still, I'm lucky, because as long as I get my nicotine, the source doesn't matter much.

i haven't started NS yet, i'm finishing my last two pre-recs, i'm trying to fight the good fight but it gets tough i work nights and with no manager to tell me to get back to work and loads of free time i can easily finish a half pack a night most times more. As if that wasn't bad enough i get all my smokes for FREE .

There is no question that Smoking is very bad for your health and the health of those 'close' to you. I am a smoker and would like to stop if only the health police would stop telling me to. Smoking is in danger of becoming the last act of rebellion in this 'ever-so-perfect' world of ours: it seems to be perfectly ok to buy a Smith & Wesson, but buy a packet of fags and God help you! Like everything in this 'free' world, it is all about money. Money is made on smoking tax - and the need to stop smoking is aimed at reducing the costs of treating smoking-related illness - not to help people stop this awful habit for their own good. :smokin:

Likewise with the 'stop smoking' industry: there's money in this: what is in smoking preventation chewing gum and patches - tobacco - and who makes the tabacco? The tabacco industry!

Smoking should be banned outright - only then will society be free to pontificate to smokers with relatively clean hands.

i agree with the outright banning of smoking, but can never see it happening. as you've said, SD, TAXES!! way too much money to be made.. and also i think the outcry would be heard from outer space!

Ban smoking? Also ban alcohol, red meat and coca cola. If you want to force people to be healthy, smoking is only the tip of the iceberg.

i quit last january! i feel so much better.

it's still kinda hard to smell smoke when i'm having a cocktail or somthing... but to be honest it makes me more nauseus than anything when i smell someone who has just smoked a cigarette or when someone blows smoke near me.

i'm glad i quit. :)

The extra 5 years? Are you kidding? What about the 10-20 before than when you drive the people around you crazy with the hacking cough, and you have to use a wheelchair to go on vacation, one that has a place for the O2 tank?

My mother had the 5 year philosophy. Died at age 60 after a miserable 10 years. Miserable for HER CHILDREN, too!

Still smoking, I never give up on quitting. 18 attempts and still believe at some point it will be for good.

Quitting is so much easier than everyone thinks. I used to think I was bounded by it and that it was the hardest thing in life to do. Then I realized that every point I made about it being so "hard" was really just me justifying the addiction -- BAD!

I won't sugar coat it -- it is SELFISH to smoke. You put others at risk for health issues, but you also put your family at risk of losing you to something very, very easily preventable.

Before you get upset over the "selfish" remark there, ask yourself why something like reading that would make you upset! Guilt? Denial?

March 2009 will mark two years of me being an ex-smoker. I quit after 10 years of smoking.

I realized what an evil habit smoking was when my DH piled me into the car after a very scary lung biopsy --had chest tubes and all--and despite the scare we'd just had, the first thing he did was roll the car window down and light a cigarette. I was so stunned I almost burst into tears. I had to force myself to believe that he was just completely addicted and that it didn't mean he didn't love me. Addicts are kinda like the drowning victim that fights off assistance; the addiction makes them a little crazy and they no longer can reason out what's good for them.

A few years later, after he had a heart attack, he was able to quit using Chantix. He says now that the pills helped, but wanting to quit was the hurdle he had to get over. It was so ironic that he'd help me quit 15 years before, yet he continued to smoke.

It still boggles my mind that people even want to smoke nowadays. It's expensive, dirty, smelly, and ruins your lungs, not to mention skin, teeth, and taste buds. Plus, there are excellent options to smoking out there -- pills, lozenges, patches.

How cool is it to put upwards of $500 a year into the pockets of billionaires? How smart is it to say you "need" to breathe hot smoky air into the delicate tissue of your lungs? Do you need to belong so badly you'll give your life for it?
