AK BSN or LPN?

I have recently been accepted into the BSN program in Anchorage, AK. My start date is January 2010. I most likely won't be able to start until that summer of 2010 though. However, I also have been accepted into the LPN program that's starts August 2008 and ends July 2009. My main goal is to move out of AK. Alaska is a gorgeous place but I was born & raised here and I want to experience life outside this state. I am trying to decide if I should just wait and stay in AK and finish my BSN degree or go to LPN school this fall, move out of state and finish my BSN degree somewhere else.

Thanks for your input.

Since you have been accepted into both programs, and the BSN does not start until the LPN is already over, why not go both ways, if finances permitting.

I was an LPN before becoming an RN, for almost 2 years, I went into the RN program 2 months after graduating the LPN program and would go this route again if I had to do this over.

Of course, the final decision is yours. I am an LPN, going through Excelsior for my RN. My concern for you is that if you go for the LPN, will you really stick with it and be determined to earn your BSN.

if i were you, i would do the LPN also, then go onto the RN. you can make money, have a foot in the door for a job and the EXPERIENCE. heck, you could put yourself into a really great position for the future!!

At first I was going to say to go the BSN route. Now I think the other posters are right. Do both and whatever you do don't get sidetracked by getting your LPN and then not going to school to finish your BSN.

As an LPN it depends on where you move if there are job opportunities. As a BSN there will always be job opportunities wherever you go :) Since you want to move you really need that BSN behind your name.

I just graduated LVN and I was thinking about how if I were to start the RN program right now how much easier it would be for me because I have a leg up. It is so hard to start right off not knowing anything about the profession and just learning everything for the first time. Some previous knowledge would have been helpful.

Just remember to keep your eye on the real prize and that is BSN and you will do just fine. :heartbeat
