Advice on Los Angeles/Southern California Nursing

  1. Hey there!
So I am currently a nursing student in Arkansas and I have 1 year left before I graduate with my BSN degree. I am looking to move to California once I graduate. I'm trying to figure things out as soon as possible because this last year is going to fly by and I feel like I should start preparing!

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to nursing outside of school. I'm looking into the New Grad Residency Programs at Children's Hospital LA and Cedars-Sinai to help me adjust to a professional nurse. Any opinions on these two programs? I'm very open to hearing what everyone has to say! Also, if anyone has any information, I'd like to know how hard it is to get accepted into the programs and how much they pay the new grads? I'm basically looking for any and all information possible!

Any advice on moving from Arkansas to California? Places to live? I've been to LA a lot but I'm not sure what neighborhoods are safe to live in/affordable for a new nurse.
Not sure how licensure/NCLEX is going to work either. Is there a different test for the 2 states? Any other information I should know?

Thanks for any help/advice! I'm open to everything!

LA is a horrible place for a new graduate. In fact, a lot of new graduates have to leave the state to land their first jobs. It's also outrageously expensive to live here and not someplace you want to move without a firm offer in hand. Get at least one year of experience (two would be better) before you get your hopes up. And start working on getting your California license way in advance of when you wish to start applying for positions. The California BON is slower than a snail hauling a brick uphill.

Unfortunately, yes ...but once you get some experience, you'll have plenty of options- especially with a BSN.
