A boy too close to home

I wrote this about my first hospice peds visit:

Sitting waiting for my daily assignments

Ready for what was to come my way

my readiness soon turned to fine dust

A young boy, who is soon to pass away

As I came to his home

Kids on his block laughing and playing

My thoughts began to roam

How is it fair this boy's life is fading

As I entered, I saw his mom

Sitting by his bed, her head on his chest

It took a while for my emotions to calm

I had to give comfort to my best

The boy in bed was much like my own

Same in age but without the illness

How unfair this mother wont see him grown

How unfair that I was there to witness

As I left it occurred to me the reason

My children are a gift

Time with them can change like the season

Soak in the moments, that's all we get
