Gen Med Vs Specialty

Do you think a new RN graduate should complete experience on a general medical or surgical floor first before going into a specialty area through a residency program?

It depends on the nurse's long term goals, job prospects in the area, what the specialty is, whether or not the nurse is willing/able to relocate, etc.

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

Med-surg is a specialty.

To answer your question, it depends on the individual, the hospital, and if med-surg is applicable to the RN's long term goals. For example it's great experience if his/her goal is adult ICU, not so much if the goal is L&D.

Do you think a new RN graduate should complete experience on a general medical or surgical floor first before going into a specialty area through a residency program?

That is contradictory. New grad residencies require less than 6 months experience. If you work Med/Surg first, you would not qualify for the program.

If you are trying to get experience by working in Med/Surg before moving on to a specialty, why would you do that when the residency gives you the experience IN that specialty?
