Future UK nurse moving to Austalia

Published

Hello lovely nursey people!! I have a question which people may or may not be able to help me with; thought I'd have a go anyway.

So, I'm a student nurse in Scotland (born and raised!) and I'm due to graduate in June 2012. I would love to move to Australia (possibly Melbourne or Brisbane) to work after I qualify; as there are very few jobs here. I was under the impression that I needed at least a year's work experience before I applied; however I have since discovered that there is a new graduate scheme available which international students can apply for. Has anyone had any experience with this program; or even as a British nurse moving to Oz? I'm a little confused; for example it appears that I can't apply until I register as a nurse in Oz, which means I need register with the NMC first, but I really need to start the application process soon as I don't have long left.

Thanks all!

Claire

1) You must obtain your nursing registration in scotland..

2) My opinion, you need at least 3 mos. (not 1 year experience) as one of the requirements..

3) Then send you application to AHPRA..

4) My opinion, you may not be required to undergo BP..

5) read ahpra website, read page 01 of this thread..

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Moved to a thread on it's own as requirements are different than the Philippines. The issue I think will not be having nursing experience as new grad jobs may be an issues.

Hi Claire. I worked with a POM:D just last year. She was a fresh grad when she decided to move to Australia. She had to do what is called a Graduate Nurse Program which usually last for a year and you will be rotated to 3-4 placements. You must have an Au nurse registration before you apply for the GNP so you can visit the AHPRA website to find out how.

Hopefully by the time you do graduate there will be plenty of jobs around. Good luck

There has been massive cutbacks lately, usually grad nurse programs are for locals but some private hospitals put on international students that have studied at a university in Australia.

You will not need to do a bridging program according to AHPRA as you have studied in the UK you will not have to do IELTS, though to get a job you will need a working visa that lasts 2 years if you are under 30 otherwise you will need to find a place that will sponsor you, that is the hard part, especially these days, public has shut up shop unless you are specialised in some specialty......get more experience in the uk first, mho.
