hi,

i have been out of school about 3 yrs now and was working at a dr office. i stayed because i thought i owed it to them as they paid for my schooling and had it great there. But life has changed directions and i realized i was wasting all my new skills sitting behind that desk-=( so i applied to a ccu step down and officially accepted it today!!!! i am going threw so many emotions. this is a huge change for me. i have never worked 12 hrs shifts nor have i done nights!!!! i am excite as this is a floor i would like to work on, but am worried i feel so overwhelmed. i haven't looked at a ekg in forever i haven't been giving out meds.....the list goes on and on. I have to quit tomorrow and am worried about that as i have been there for 10yrs. i hope i willl be happy in my new setting. But i am so worried, excited, happy, scared and it goes on and on.

Wow... if this is really what you want, than all I can say is Good Luck!

But... are you SURE this is what you want? Or are you just worried about "losing your skills". There are SO many

different fields of nursing out there that require different kinds of nursing skills... the job you currently have must require SOME skills, or else it wouldn't require someone with a nursing degree!

Take the job that I have right now.... I use very few of my "nursing skills", in fact I really do very little hands on work. But I've come to realize that I belong here and that my skills are needed.... I do give out lots of medication, and I write treatment plans, lots of them. And there are other things.

Sounds like you may just need to venture out of your comfort zone and try something new, and again I wish you Good Luck! It's just that... I'm sitting here thinking about how good it SOUNDS like you have it. =)

It is going out of your comfort zone. You will learn lots, they will orient you . Make sure if you have any questions or need more time to learn, let them know. Learning is good. Overwhelmed...yes...you'll be ..exhausted..yes. take it easy and be kind to yourself. Best wishes.

yes! its out of my comfort zone, and i thought about this for a long time. I felt like if i didnt leave and try this i would always wonder and regret!!!!! i went to school most of my life 2 become a nurse, and always wanted to do bedside nursing. I felt a real pull when i was done with school as others went off and i was stuck where i was. So i am excited for new adventure and overwhelmed.

Well, you'll do fine! If you are sure that this is what you want to do, and it sounds like you are... it's important that you go for it!!! =) It is overwhelming and scary and I'm sitting here just imagining how you feel right now... but also it's EXCITING, embrace that!!!

Good luck!!!!!!

Congrats on your new job. Since you've put in three years post-nursing school with your employer, then that should be more than enough to pay off your tuition debt to them and it's understandable for you to want to move on and try hospital nursing since it's something you've been wanting to do. If you leave on good terms with your employer then you can probably count on them for good references in the future (and maybe this is what helped you get your new job) and if you ever decide to go back then you'll have that option too.
