Ellean55 - I think several people have stated that the foreign (to the US ) nurses are not at fault. The hospitals and recruiters are taking advantage of the situation. The fact is that the economy in this country is in bad shape and our hospitals should be employing our citizens first. Our economy won't improve until we start taking care of our citizens first. And before you start accusing me of being pro-union and being out on picket lines let me tell you that my husband is a white collar automotive employee (at least he was until he got laid off ) I blame the auto union for a big portion of the Big 3's problems so I am not a Ra-Ra go Union person. I just think that jobs in US hospitals should not be filled by foreign nurses when there are so many new grads who can't get a job. Do you honestly think it is ok that they are doing that? I guess I am curious to understand your logic.

Does anyone know this recuiters name? or has anyone been able to find a link to the story. I want to email her and tell her I need a job and I am already here (no legislation or plane ride needed). I already posted about being a new grad and not being able to find a job. Half of the class behind me has had their offers retracted and we are all freeking out. I am currently trying to find a job as a CNA while I am waiting for someone who will hire a new grad RN, but I am finding that legally I can't work as a CNA either because I never took the CNA test (I was an EMT medic in the Army) and I am not legally certified to work in any position other than a RN. This is extremely frustrating. I have a family that I need to support and it looks like as new grad RN I will be trying to find work in the landscaping industry this summer. I would love to meet this recruiter face to face.

Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the woman Gretchen was interviewing. I will see if I can find the segment on youtube or someplace.

I would like to ask several questions

Which country allowed its oldest investment bank to collapse?

Which administration did this happen?

I guess I don't understand how who we blame for the recession justifies giving jobs to nurses from foreign countries when our own new grads can't get hired. Guess I don't get the logic of that.

I have looked all over Fox's site for the segment but I cannot find it. I should have DVRed it. :(

Don't waste your time writing Fox. Write your Congressman and Senators instead....They are the ones who can effect changes in legislation....

Absolutely true, take your efforts and energy to your elected reps, whoever they may be, and let them know that you are SUFFERING and that action must be taken! They are the ones who will produce results, but it must be a show of force.

As a sidenote, I find it horribly ironic that relentlessly pro-corporate Fox 'news' would disseminate this story. That "anti media" media outlet puts out such skewed, politicized blather that it's virtually impossible to believe any of it, but there are pieces of reality in this foreign nurse piece they did ...... American trained nursing students, who paid lots of $$ to local nursing schools and precepted in local hospitals, cannot find work w/ local employers ??

Then these local employers feel justified w/ hiring workers they can pay less, in order to increase their corporate profits??

To those of you who "oppose" the recruiment of overseas nurses, I bet you are there on the picket line along with Americas worst supremacist group - using the nursing shortage on which to vent your prejudice and discriminatory views.

Such comments are highly offensive. I feel it is my RIGHT as an American-born woman to have access to and be considered for American jobs first before any other non-U.S. citizen. I paid (and am still paying) an enormous amount of money to educate myself here on American soil, given countless hours in volunteer time at hospitals, and have worked my butt off for the chance at getting a fair-pay job in my home country! That does NOT make me or anyone else here a racist. Why is it all of a sudden completely unacceptable to defend our own best interests as American citizens?? This country will fail if those of us who live and work here do not step up to defend ourselves and our livelihoods. We have a tendency as a nation to look after everyone else in the world, to both good and bad effect. However, given the current state of things, I'd say its about time we look out for US first; if we don't we won't be able to help out other people and countries in the future (and quite frankly, I think if the U.S. was in dire need of help of any kind, no one--or very few--would come forth to help us). I ask you: why must Americans continue to martyr themselves for the benefit of others?? I'm so sick of this crap. :angryfire

I totally agree, and you could not pay me enough to suffer through Faux News, but in this instance, you could argue that they did us a favor by bringing this issue to our attention in a way. Even if the so-called nursing shortage was misrepresented (and to be fair, other news outlets have also painted the false impression that there is a shortage, not just them), at least now, we can lobby our representatives to not allow this legislation to go through.

Ellean55, sorry to be blunt but you seriously need to take a chill pill. Telling people to stop talking about this topic because it's upsetting to you and you're offended? Well, in this country, we have this thing called freedom of speech (albeit, moderated speech here), so if you're upset by the topic, stop reading the thread! You are taking things way too personally, like seeing attacks on foreign nurses when that is simply not the case at all. We are unhappy about the economic situation and the idea that foreign nurses could be hired when nurses here can't get jobs and that is an absolutely legitimate concern. When the recession started, the banking crisis - those are off-topic, and smacks of a poor attempt to derail discussion of the real issue.
