Foreign nurse from Africa

Published

hi there. i am from Buirkina faso in west Africa with a two ears degree(associate degree ). i worked there for 4 years before coming here in october 2006.

I live in seattle but i applied with new york to have my transcripts evaluated. it is still in process.

Anybody there with a 2 years degree got thru? I am appying to take the NCLEX-RN.

i would appreciate any input

NY takes about 8 months for you to get approval, that is how long that it takes to get the CVS done.

You are actually applying for licensure as an RN, as one cannot apply directly to take the NCLEX exam.

Bigger question for you is what type of visa are you on? Is it one that will permit you to work? If not, you are going to be directly affected by the retrogression that we have in place right now.

Whether or not the two year degree will be accepted will be based on the requirement that it has to be considered a first level RN in your country. That is what they base things on as far as licensure.

Please take the time to read the Primer at the top of this forum, there is much information there that you need to have before you start any process for licensure here in the US.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you suzanne for your reply. I am a green card holder based on my marriage so I guess I will not have any problem in this part. I applied with cvs on the 2nd of November. The process is on and I hope everything will go well.

Glad to hear that you have a visa that will permit you to work, but you are still looking at 8 months or so to get permission to sit for the NCLEX exam for NY. They are actually the longest in granting permission to sit for it since the CVS is required.

Thanks Suzanne4 for your sollicitude. I am aware that the Credentials verification with New York take about 6-8 months. I started the process at the beginning of November 2007. I spoke today with my Nursing school headmaster and he just received the transcripts request from CGFNS yesterday. Hopefully,he is going to respond in the coming days. There will remain the request for my Nursing license authority. What I do not get is that, it seems Cgfns does not post both letters at the same time. To my understanding, they wait for the first letter before the send the second one, that makes the process longer; but anyway, it is good to know that the process is on.
