I am a 24 year old student and I received my A.A from Miami Dade College in 2009. I graduated with an embarrassing GPA of 2.88 receiving A's and B's in all my sciences except for 2 lab classes that I got C's in. My transcripts are a mess, I've changed my major 3 times (medical sonography, marketing, and back to nursing) and I graduated with 87 credits! I feel like I've been in school forever and after not getting accepted into Miami Dade Medical College, and NSU's Nursing program I panicked. So I applied for Nova Southeastern University's Biology program and got accepted. I planned to attend for only one semester to boost my GPA and apply again to a Nursing Program. I've just finished my first semester at NSU and I did raise my GPA, now I have a 2.995 I am 1 point away from meeting the required GPA for consideration into MDC Medical and NSU. I'm afraid I won't be accepted again. :crying2:

Does anyone know of a school that looks at the GPA of the sciences instead of the overall GPA? I don't want to change my major again because this is a career I can't wait to begin and I am so eager to learn, and determined to get in somewhere.

I know St Petersburg College looks at your GPA for the pre-req's and not the overall.

Broward college base their decision on you pre-req gpa and hesi score.

Remember, when schools base their decisions on your pre-reqs and not overall gpa they expect more. Also, what their minimum posted and the true minimum is subjective. At Florida Gulf Coast they state their min is a 2.5, but if you have less than a 3.3 don't even bother.

Thats what is happening to me, at NSU, the minimum required GPA is a 2.5 but you need a 3.0 to be considered. I don't understand, its all very frustrating to me.

Will definitely agree on the subjectivity of the "minimum" GPA. SPC claims 2.5 but I've seen people with a 3.6 get rejected.

It can be extremely frustrating. I applied 4 times before I finally got accepted. If this is truly your dream, don't give up! Keep pushing down whatever avenue you can!!

It all has to do with competition...the more people apply, the higher the "unspoken" GPA required. I agree, don't give up! A lot of us have been waiting awhile, and may wait a while still. Keep on persevering, and you will succeed!!

I feel your pain!!! I have 130 credits!!! Just graduated from MDC with my AA in pre-nursing. Idk if you've heard but they have since changed their entrance requirements. Now they look at Anatomy 1 and 2 with labs Chemistry With lab and finally microbiology with no lab. In addition to that, there is a TEAS exam. 40% of the determination is on your pre-req gpa and 60% is the TEAS score. Another school (the school I applied and got accepted to) is Hillsborough Community College. They look at :

a. ENC 1101 Freshman English 1 3cr

b. BCS 1085 Human Anatomy & Physiology 1 3cr

c. BSC 1085L Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab 1cr

d. BSC 1086 Human Anatomy & Physiology II 3cr

e. BSC 1086L Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab II 1cr

f. MAC1105 College Algebra 3cr - or higher (updated 2010)

g. SYG 2000 Introduction to Sociology 3cr.

h. MCB 1000 Microbiology 3cr.

i. MCB 1000L Microbiology Lab 1cr.

The higher your pre req gpa is for HCC the better.... A 3.5 or better would place you in at least an alternate position.

Don't be discouraged.... if anything.... take the lpn route and just bridge it over. No need spending an arm and a leg at Nova if you really want to be a Nurse. (just my opinion) GOOD LUCK!!!

This just occurred to me... so I've reserved seating for the lpn entrance exam at Mercy Hospital, and I am also looking into other school for that.

Well here is the deal. You intend to go to nursing school right? Well, you are obviously losing at the waiting game with the regionally accredited programs and the longer you wait, it seems the higher the bar is to get accepted. Why don't you ( gasp - dare I say ) apply to a school that is BON approved and get going! Sure it may be more costly but heck student loans give you a lifetime to pay them back. If you do some military reserve work, they'll reimburse you for your tuition. Then with your A.S. in nursing in hand, find a fully accredited RN to BSN program and get your butt going. It can be done. That's what I'm doing.
