"Proof of employment"? for Florida RN license by endorsement?

U.S.A. Florida

Hello, I am planning to get a Florida RN license by endorsement. I see that Florida requires that applicants have to prove they've been working for 2 of past 3 years to apply for a Florida RN license by endorsement.

Here's my problem----I've been doing private duty for a relative for most of past 2 years, and not through any agency, and i wasn't always "paid" either.

I have called the Florida Board of Nursing to ask if any additional proof would be required in that situation, if i just have the relative still living fill in the form, as if she was my employer,

but, the person i spoke to said she had no idea, kept repeating "They just review each case and decide what else they might want. I can't know what they might want."

Does anyone know what else would be required? I did not keep the occasional checks my relatives gave me for 'proof of employment', and since i was barely breaking even with things i bought for my uncle's care, gas and travel, etc, i didn't claim this on my W2 forms, either.

but, wow, i was working!! and hard, too!! He had colostomies, wounds, dressings, physical therapies, multiple surgeries and recoveries, tons of meds, frequent problems of all kinds, and towards the end, it was more like hospice care.

Has anyone else had their private duty work investigated by Florida board of nursing? If so, what proof did you have to provide??

Thank you to anyone who can share any info or experience with this!!

Did you take the NCLEX? Where is your original license from? I endorsed to Florida with a Wisconsin RN license without a problem (no experience but I did take the NCLEX.

THANK YOU BELLE!!

I did take NCLEX.....30+ years ago, though. (pretty sure it was called NCLEX, even back then...) Over the years, i've been licensed in multiple states,

but, never ever had to provide "proof you are currently nursing". ever. Not once.

Did you, Belle, have "proof" to submit that you were working for 2 of past 3 years?

THAT is the part i have a concern about. IF i'd been working in a hospital, or through an agency, i wouldn't have a concern, it's only the "proof of employment for 2 of past 3 years"

that i have a concern about, since i have neither a W2 form, nor a formal paycheck, to vouch that i was nursing.

You don't need it if you did take the NCLEX. You would only need to fill out the form if you are from somewhere that has a different licensing exam (like Puerto Rico) and you can get your RN license by showing proof of employment for the last 2/3 years post graduation. If you look at the form at the very top it says "do not fill out if you took the NCLEX" something along those lines. On the application itself, it just asks for the date and location you took the NCLEX and the result. I'm assuming that's all you would need since you are already an RN.

Hope that helps :)

Edited to add: no I didn't need to show proof of employment to endorse my license. I just did the application, submitted my RN info through nursys, continuing education course that they require and my background check.

OHhhh, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH, BELLE!!! I will have to look over that form a little more carefully then, i thought it DID ask out-of-state RNs to submit "proof of employment" for 2 of the last 3 years.

ah ha!! Because it is hard to know what the FL board of nursing might see as "proof" for a private duty nurse who is not working through an agency.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

EDIT---YES, yes, you are completely correct, Belle, i think i did not read it slowly and carefully enough to spot that very small distinction, that yes, if i have taken an NCLEX, that this proof of employment is not mandatory, WHEW!! thanks again!!

hi, when you say background check it means I have to go through the live fingerprint scan which they now require? I did everything else except for the fingerprint which I am going to do now.

I mailed in my finger print cards and they do the background check. I'm not sure about the scan.

thanks. i think they now require the electronic live fingerprint scan starting jan, 2013.

Hey Belle, I am from Wisconsin looking at endorsing to FL. As far as continuing education what did you do? Did you have to have your CE fulfilled before applying? I have everything else figure out including what classes I have to take for CE but I just don't know how to go about it.

Go to Nurse.com | Nursing News, Jobs, Continuing Education and you can find the required classes you need for you FL license and as long as you register on the site they will automatically report them to the FL BoN. I'm also from WI and went through the endorsement process to get my FL license 4 years go. Fl requires 24 hours of CE courses during each renewal period so that site is great for doing those also. You don't have to worry about sending anything in to prove you completed your hours because it is automatically done for you.
