hi guys,
i'm a nurse in florida, and have a "disqualifying" charge on my background. after being turned down for nursing home jobs (after i left the hospital)...i began to wonder what the problem was...well, finally, one alf took the time to explain to me what the problem was, and it was one of my offenses which disqualifies me for employment in a long term care setting. now, she took the effort to tell me about "exemptions"; in other words, i can apply to the florida bon for an exemption, which will let me work in any facility, without problem. if i had known about this 6 months ago, i'd already have my exemption letter in hand, and have a job! but, too late to worry about that now....i finially got my exemption application out to the bon on friday, and must await an answer....
here's my question:
does anyone have any experience with the "exemptions"?
i'd like to know how long they take, and if i'll have to go before the board again even though i already addressed the incident with the board when i applied for licensure after graduating...(that was only in feb. of 08) so, i'm hoping that it was recent enough that they'll just approve it without having to deal with an appearance....going before the florida board is merciless....i had a hard time doing that...i had to stand in front of 1000 people and tell my life story, and it was quite difficult. on top of that, i had to get a review by ipn to the tune of 1500.00! luckily, no intervention or treatment was recommended (thank god! i hear they're very difficult to deal with, and some have even left the nursing filed just because they don't want to deal with ipn anymore!!)...so, anyway, thanks for your feedback on exemptions if you have any....this damn charge will follow me the rest of my life! i have pounded this into my kids' heads so that they'll think long and hard before doing something stupid...lol!
thanks everyone!

Hi nursegena! I too sent out an exemption application to the FBON at the begginning of this month. It is very frustrating because I too only found out about this when I was offerred a job at a LTC facility. I talked to the FBON yesterday and they said that my background check was sent out yesterday and to call back in a week. Hope your process is running smoothly. I am so ready to work!!:wink2:

Please tell, if you don't mind - what were the offense/charges/dispositions that the two posters above have required an exemption for?
Misdemeanor or Felony?
Guilty, Not-guilty, Nolle Pros, or Nolo Contendere?
