Missouri hospital offers nursing students $5K sign-on bonuses
Hmm...seems to me they're suffering from a nursing shortage. They certainly don't offer sign-on bonuses to new grads when they have a glut of graduate nurses from which to choose.

Hmmm!
I just posted this in another thread:
Oh yeah. Things ain't what they use to be. Except for sign-on bonuses. It seems hospitals around here pay more to bring 'em in than to keep 'em.Well, in the St. Louis and Illinois metro-east area, there are still lots of opportunities for nurses- both RN and LPN.I know lots of nurses who are moving around all the time.

Klone, my area has a glut of new grads to choose from and we've been offering sign-on bonuses for years (not when I graduated years ago though but...sigh). We have an issue that everyone wants to initially work at our hospital and get that golden year of experience and then leave after we've paid to train them. Our hospital is looked at as the place to work at in our area but these new hires are leaving and moving as fast as we can train them. This is why I am frustrated by the lack/shortage of seasoned nurses. I don't think many new grads want to stay at the hospital bedside anymore...but they damn sure want to use our resources to get a year under their belt either way.
I am being told that we have no longer been giving "good" recommendations for those leaving before the first two years and/or breaking their sign-on contracts. Still hasn't phased many of them from leaving. Again a top 50 hospital, competitive wages, and truly a good place to work with a ton of cool bells and whistles. Oh well.

A hospital could easily lure me in by offering to pay some of my student loans. That would be marvelous.

Our hospital is offering student loan forgiveness for certain hard to fill positions (ED and OR, I think - we offered it in OB when we still had open positions). $12,000 total over 3 years.
Currently I have no student loan reimbursement BUT they are paying for my MSN - $5,000/year up to $20,000. I'm completing it part time and it will take me 3 years so I will pay very little out of pocket.
BUT, I did find out that we qualify for student loan forgiveness at my facility so that is a plus. Now I just need to start making those pesky payments.

I like Springfield. I'm from the area and WOULD consider working there, but my husband couldn't do what he does there. Not enough of an economy. It's great if you're single or your partner is a nurse. Really awesome cost of living! I can't afford to retire where I live now, but it's great for making money!

Warning to new grads... steer clear of sign on bonuses! It is a huge red flag that you'll always be working short!! They look great when you're in school, but places that aren't short don't offer bonuses. Stay away.

I agree that the pendulum in swinging back to a shortage again. Both hospitals where I work are having problems filling positions. It sounds like this us a regional situation.
The is a really good time for any nurse to make a career move to another specialty. There are more openings. Tired of LTC? Now is the chance to get into acute care!

Here is a position in Utah offering $20,000 in a sign on bonus. It's for NICU.
There is a strong connection between Las Vegas and Utah, so Utah NICU nurses might be tempted by the higher paying jobs in Las Vegas and then Utah hospitals have vacancies.
I imagine the whole topic would provide an interesting research opportunity for nursing PhD students.
