frustrated on "2 yr experience required"

Nurses New Nurse

Published

so i tried calling up hospitals about their new graduate rn program and to my surprise some of them require a 1 or 2 yr work experience before i can get in their program. Their reason being is i am a foreign graduate from another country (philippines) but i am an american citizen who recently passed my nclex this august with 1 attempt, 75 q's. i am not bragging...but i did put a lot of hard work, preparation, dedication to get my license and now i am a registered nurse...some hospitals do want to accept a foreign graduate? i understand that a "newbie:, i have limited clinical experience at this point but i possess a body of knowledge that can be put to good use in different hospital settings. just like new RNs out there...i am full of energy, enthuastic, and eager to learn and work hard. what more can they ask for? hayy...a nurse recruiter advised on working in a rehabilitative nurse facility, nursing homes, ltc to brush up on my time management. ( what is the difference between working in nursing facility and a hospital?) but isn't that one of the many things you learn from a "new graduate rn program" AND is that why there is such program to help the transition from school to hospital settings?

Any inputs, thoughts about my dilemma. Please enlighten me....

Instead of trying to find a "new graduate program", could you just apply as a new graduate on the floor and learn the routine through orientation. I mean you are a USA citizen and you did pass the NCLEX, and I assume that foreign nursing classes are comparable to USA nursing classes, right? I mean at one point I had heard that the US was actually going to import foreign nurses to fill the shortage, so why would they not give you, a US citizen a chance? Am I missing something?

It may be the way that you are approaching them. Where are you looking, then maybe I can offer some suggestions. It is definitely not an issue that you are a foreign graduate, I assist them all of the time.

Well I approached them with respect and politely ask them for openings. Please elaborate more on what u mean by "approaching them". Trust me...I am not in anyway rude when I get turned down but I am just CURIOUS why they say that. The more I get challenge to get my foot in the door without looking so desperate. I just think it is discriminatory. :stone

Your suggestions please......thank u so much.

Call up an Air Force recruiter and ask for the number to the Health Professions recruiter. Ask about the Nurse Transition Program and if you could get sponsored for a day onto the base nearest you and see the hospital because you're interested in a career in the Air Force. We need graduates like you who want respect. How about letting us show you how to turn yourself into a federal officer.

As I asked before, where in the US do you wish to work? Who are you contacting at the hospital? It has nothing to do with what you say or anything else, but this is something specialized and not all do it.

You need to provide me with more details and I will be happy to hep you, but I am unable to second guess. Feel free to send me a pm if you wish.
