I've been a nurse for 9 years, and I love, love, LOVE my job as health services coordinator for an assisted living facility. Yes, there are days I want to scream, but for the most part it's an exciting, challenging, rewarding position, and I expect to stay with it for many years to come.

I will admit it took me a long time to find the right job, but no matter where I've been, I've always tried to make the best of it. It's when the bad days outnumber the good that I move on, and being a patient woman, I usually take quite a while to decide I've had enough.

I will also say that nursing is what has made me a patient woman. When I was younger, I didn't have a clue as to what went on in other peoples' heads, but I did have a hair-trigger temper and a mouth to match. Having dealt with countless 'delicate' situations over the years, I've had to develop the ability to assess a situation from many different angles, and to not give up the first time---or the tenth---that I try to do something. In addition, I know now that everything isn't all about me, how I feel, what I think, how something affects me. Maybe that's come with age too; but I don't know that I would EVER have learned that lesson if I hadn't become a nurse.

Nursing isn't glamourous, and it's certainly NOT easy, but I can't think of anything else I'd rather do........except maybe for the cushy job on that Travel Channel show where the host gets to stay at the world's greatest hotels. Alas, I'm a bit too long in the tooth for that one, and I definitely do NOT look good in a bikini, so I'd best just stick to nursing.;)

I just started in the Neonatal ICU and I LOVE it!! It is just blissful and it does not feel like work at all to me. I couldn't be happier.

:yeahthat:

I have a job offer for ER, I am hoping I at least like it alittle bit....LOL

Trauma junkie I am but when you are working in ER I am affraid I will find I dont like it. I just wish I knew all I needed to know now!....LOL

Specializes in ED.

I've been working my first RN job in a small hospital med/surg unit since March. I do love it. My co-workers are great there. If you need help with anything they are right there (as long as they are caught up of course). I couldn't ask for a better group to work with really.

I was on the elevater once and after pushing my button to get to my floor the nurse that came on after me said "well, I'm glad to not be going to that floor!". I didn't say it but was thinking, well we don't want you then! Wouldn't want to mess up our "harmonious vibe" lol

That is so great to hear. the saying "misery loves company" seems to be true everywhere you turn, it is so nice to hear that some nurse really love there job. I know that a lot of nurses just need to vent but as a newbie it can get me down sometimes and I haven't even started yet! I find myself steering clear of the negative post till I am more experienced! I can't help the weary yet anyways! Thanks for posting on this thread!!!!!

Hi Amy D.

I can understand your sadness and concern when you feel like you haven't even started and what you read sounds pretty negative sometimes. Give your job a chance...your chance...not someone else's chance.

I love what I do and have been doing it for over 17 years. It took some time for me to realize that I enjoy acute care the most. You will find your niche. There is good and bad in anything, I have come to find out. Take care and best of luck!

Specializes in Case Management.

I love my job but I am not doing bedside nursing. I work for a health plan. What I love about it is that it is steady daylight, with weekends and holidays off. I am very content with the pay. When I was doing bedside nursing I worked steady night turn for a busy telemetry unit at a community hospital. I loved my job then also, but I burned out from the job. This job is better for me due to a much lower stress level. I am not dealling with life and death issues being placed on my shoulders, and I like that better.

believe it or not, i started as a med/surg nurse on the 3-11 shift in 1985. since then i have worked icu, home health care, ltc, and tried a stint in juvenile corrections. now almost 20 plus years into nursing, i am back on med/surg.

nothing was as exciting and challenging as the med/surg floor. no where did i work as hard with so little. (staffing usually) lol. maybe i am a machocist at heart.

on med/surg there is a litte bit of everything and you really never know what can go wrong next. patients can seem stable one minute and at the edge of a code the next.

i actually do love it. i do not like the short staffing and i do not like the "system" games that go along with the job. but i do love the patient care and the challenges.

Specializes in ICU/CCU/MICU/SICU/CTICU.

I too love my job. I work in CCU/MICU. We are a combined unit so its never the same. There are days when I wonder why Im still in nursing 12 yrs later. Then something happens and I know why.

Like someone else said, give your job YOUR chance. Just because someone else doesnt like it doesnt mean you wont. Thats the wonderful thing about nursing, there are so many areas that you can work until you find your "spot".

Specializes in Medical/Surgical/Maternal and Child.

We became nurses because we care and want to help the sick heal both physically and mentally. Eventually, we each find our own little niche where we can do this whether it's in the hospital setting or out of the hospital setting. To me nurses are very special people and I'm proud to call myself one. :)
