Hello everyone!
After passing the NCLEX,my focus now is job hunting.I saw different openings in the hospital but needs 4 months to a year of experience.I don't have any experience yet whatsoever except for my clinical portion of my study, that was 6 years ago.
I also saw an ad in a veterans nursing home. For experience-0 to 1year.
Now I am thinking which place is good to apply, and hoping be accepted, which place is good to work for a new nurse like me without any experience? Safety wise, and for getting a good experience.Does both place train a new nurse?I am sure hospital has preceptorship, but how about the nursing home?
I hope someone out there who has an experience for both place or somebody who can give me an idea.
Looking forward to hear from people here. Thanks for your inputs.

I"d apply at both places. Just because they're asking for 4-12 months experience doesn't mean they won't take less. Of course, in this unfriendly economy it's hard for grad nurses to find a job. You may find yourself at a disadvantage compared to brand new grads, given that you graduated 6 years ago. They may want you to take a refresher course, which wouldn't be a bad idea at all. In the meantime, put in lots of applications and see what you get. The worst thing they can say is "no thank you."

I agree with mustlovepoodles. It wouldn't hurt if you apply for both. Each facility varies when it comes to orientation. I work at a nursing home, with 6 weeks of preceptorship and currently on my own. I took the job to have some sort of experience and get my foot on the door. Be sure to ask the nurse-patient ratio during your interview. Knowing how many patients you would handle would help you make up your mind. Good Luck! =D

Hi cebuana_nurse,
Since you're working in the nursing home, did you find it working safe than working in the hospital? I still don't know the difference too of this two facilities.Which is good to apply, whether in hospital or in a nursing home.I too don't have any work experience, and in applying, I m considering which place to go wherein we're safe being an inexperience RN.I am talking about safety when it comes to mistakes, that is,our supervisors are more helpful to us.
I hope to hear some feedbacks to both facility.
Thanks.

Having the chance to experience both, I believe that both may have a chance of being unsafe. It totally depends on what's the nurse-patient ratio in your unit is. When you land an interview, don't forget to ask this as this is very important.

Many new grads don't get a job until they have submitted literally hundreds of applications or resumes, so limiting yourself to applying at one prospective employer is probably not a wise move in the beginning. Hope you find something suitable soon.
