Hello, I am currently in nursing school and engaged to an EMT, Who is starting at our fire department in January we have been together since I was just a freshman in high school and over the years, the most important thing is always making time for each other. Between school, working full time etc. it's hard to maintain it all. I'm feeling overwhelmed by the thought of myself working three 12-hr shifts while he works the normal 24on/48of FF schedule. We have no children yet, but plan to maybe in 3-5 years. How do you handle the two schedules? Making time for each other/ your children?
Ive always wanted to be a travel nurse (L&D) how do you handle having and rasining a family while doing that? Just the thought of all of this makes me anxious thank you!!!

You both will be off 4 days a week. Do you really need help planning time together ? Life is about making sacrifices to get where you want to be. The alternative is to be low income non working bums and be together 7 days a week never more than 2 feet from each other.

Also- sometimes saying 'yes' to one thing (having kids, marrying a firefighter) means saying 'no' to something else (unlimited 'us time, travel nursing). It's called being an adult. You'll get the hang of it.

Ah, youth.... you don't know exactly how things will work out but it will. My only advice is to make sure you and your significant other are on the same page as far as childrearing expectations.... and enjoy this time of your life!

AW! Im also a nursing student and my boyfriend of 3 years is an EMT/ Firefighter. We have talked about this many times. If its like my boyfriend, he works 24hrs, then is off the next two days, and so on. If you think about it, if the schedules are planned right, you would only work on maybe one or two of his days off a week. And you only work 12 hrs, so you would see him when you get off (7pm) or spend all day with him until its time to go to work at night. And if you both happen to work the same days.. well thats when the grandparents come in lol! Its doable! Hugs and best of luck!!
