Finished High School: Need Help With Program Selection

Updated:   Published

Good day everyone! I'm 15 years and I just finished high school. My father wanted me to do a prenursing program for 2 years then go to uni get my BSN(RN) degree that will be when I'm 17years but I don't want to, he said I will be restricted and limited because of my age but how can age limitations be that severe or important?

I wanted to enter uni to do my BSN(RN) 4 years degree program as soon as possible without 'wasting time' on the prenursing program. We have also not yet decided on the university for the 4 years programme or the institution for the prenursing program so any recommendations will be taken seriously. Furthermore, we live in Canada but was hoping for suggestions around Ontario, Toronto, etc but will be open to other suggestions.

Thank you for your help and time.

I am in the US so I don't know about Canadian programs. Have you looked up a specific BSN program and reviewed the curriculum in Canada? Here in in the US, students start the first 2 years of a BSN program taking the basic sciences and social sciences that are the foundation for the nursing major. Courses like anatomy and physiology, English composition and many more. You may actually be looking at the same thing as your father. Also you may want to look up the lowest age that a nursing license can be granted.

@Divine Segbemi Hi, did you just finished highschool in Ontario? I don't think there is an age limit in entering college/university if you finished your Canadian Highschool Diploma at such young age. I'm a little bit confused why you haven't applied for college/university while in Grade 12? In my experience the Guidance Counsellor kinda prepared us to which Grade 11-12 prerequisite courses were necessary to enter preferred post-secondary program. (But I was 18 when we immigrated to Canada and I went back to Grade 11 & 12 unfortunately).

Anyhow, if you're looking into university then you can register to: https://www.ouac.on.ca/ and search the program and send application up to 5 universities then wait for offer email then pick & choose. You either need to choose which start date you wanted since Fall 2022 & Winter/Summer 2023 are mostly closed now.

For BScN, there are now Colleges which are providing the full 4yr BScN program. Also, there is the Collaborative BScN - 2yr (year 1-2) in a college then 2 yr (year 3-4) in a University or you take the full 4yr at a university.

Here's a list universities offering BScN per College of Nurses of Ontario: https://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/approved-nursing-programs/RN-programs/

Some options in the Greater Toronto Area:

Devine Segbemi, I am honestly not trying to be picky, I'm trying to give you some constructive criticism for the future. You must be a very smart student in order to graduate from high school at 15. However, I am looking at your post, and you might want to work on your writing and communication skills. In order to get through College, and Nursing School, you must be able to write with proper capitalization, punctuation, spacing between words and letters, as well as spelling and grammar, and sentence structure. Being able to communicate effectively is critical in the medical field. If a word is spelled incorrectly, it may look like a similar word or medication, which could cause an error that could cause harm to a patient.

Not to burst your bubble but youre not getting into any nursing program in Ont.   at 15, especially without some kind of post-secondary education. Your high school grades have to be A+++ to get into a BScN program and even then the universities will accept their own students before they accept you(highschooler).

I graduated early as well(16) and thought the same as you, I applied to 8 RPN programs and 2 RN programs and got 0 acceptance. So I finally took a 2yr PreHealth Sciences, graduated w/ 3.8GPA and every program I applied for I got accepted(Nursing/RT/Dental Hygiene/Paramedic). I actually accepted the RT program and did a year of that before I switched to RPN- I discovered I hate saliva. Always apply for backup programs!

hope that helps :)

Thank you-and no you didn't, I realized I was being delusional and unrealistic. I just applied for admission into Conestoga college for their Pre-health sciences pathway to advanced diplomas and degrees and hopefully, I get in. I also have another question; their program is just 1 year(specifically 8 months with 2 semesters) but I thought if it is just 1 year it wouldn't be that important compared to the other 2years programs. or are they all the same and I shouldn't worry about it? May I also ask about the name of the institution you did your 2yr Pre Health sciences?

With all due respect you don't sound mature enough for nursing yet. You need more than good grades. You have replied to people here with attitude and you will gave a tough go of it in a BSN program.
