finding a way to go to school to become a nurse

Published

hi. I am looking for some help or direction. I am a working mother with a 11 year old and 2 year old. I want to go to school to become a nurse but I have to work. All the nursing programs in my area (Naperville, Illinois) are during the day well at least all the labs are during the day usually between 9am and 3pm. I work 9-5 and cannot afford to stop working to pursue my dreams. Are their any weekend classes that will allow me to get the education I need to become a nurse (RN)? Are their any schools that have night classes with night labs? Are their online schools that will allow me to become a RN? Are their any accelerated schools where I can become a RN in 2 years? Please help me I have always wanted to become a nurse but I had a child at a young age and just never was able to take the time to go back to school but now I am married and want a better life for my family and I.

All I can suggest that you do is put in your FAFSA, apply to the schools you're interested in, take the student work jobs and the grants and the loans, and go. I'm going to a community college - RN is a three year degree there (1 year of pre reqs, 2 years of nursing classes)

Another option is to do what I suggested with the FAFSA, apply, loans, and grants - and get an LVN. Here, that's one year. If you work for the hospital here they are very understanding of school schedules and - with a contract - will pay your tuition.

HI , I am going thru the same thing right now , I have three kids and am also a young mommy!. I also work 6.30 to 5.30pm all week and can't afford not too. I am in kissimmee and have had no luck finding a night class and the one I did find told me you have to be avail by 3pm some Days for labs so no way!!. Let me know how you do and I will pass on anything I find!

Hi..

I am going through the same thing right now..I am a single mom with two kids, mine are older though, 16 and 12. I have finally decided to go back to school. The only problem is I do have to work also. I am stuck in a cubicle job that I hate and I am trying to figure out how to to transform my life for the better for myself and the kids. So you are not alone...lol....

I am currently taking pre-req at the community college, but I know once I get to clinicals I will need to be available by 3:00, dont know how this is going to work.

I was thinking about an LPN program to see if I can complete that in a year and then go to work and bridge to RN,once my foot is in the door.

However, I am having trouble finding a program in the evenings even for that.

I am not sure how all this is going to come about, but I just keep faith that somehow it will. I have waited so long to go back to school and I do not want to give up now.....lol

The only other thing I was thinking about is applying for student loans and living off of that for a year..????

Keep me posted on how you make out....remember you are not alone!! Good Luck!!
