Felony DUI and Lvn license

Published

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had gotten a felony dui while in nursing school, got it expunged after 3 years of probation  and was still able to take the NCLEX and receive a license ? I know I will be able to sit for the test but from what I’m reading, the issue is the boards actually giving you the license regardless if you pass. I called the boards and they said “ We review everything case by case so we can’t give you a definite answer. It would be up to you if you want to take the risk of going through nursing school or not “

Thanks for any advice

I have a felony and its not expunged. I have just recently been approved to take NCLEX . I will be on probation for 3 years and can only get a single state license. That may sound bad to some people but I am grateful for the opportunity after turning my life around! It was a longer process, just don't give up!

Jessica Prince ,
hi thank you for sharing. Have you talked to anyone from the Nursing boards to ask how difficult it will be to obtain the actual license after you have taken your boards? All I keep hearing is that it depends case by case and they would have to review everything before considering I also know that if they deny your license you are able to appeal

A felony dui? I have a misdemeanor DWI and I completed my nursing program and got approved for boards. Here's my advice... Be honest on your application, because they find it no matter what. I had to write a letter explaining what happened and provide court documents. I believe people generally want to help those who have changed their lives around. The board of nursing is more against crimes related to people..thefts, shootings, I believe anyway.

I submitted my application to the board along with paperwork on charges I had in the past, which was several. Then I had to go to a meeting to explain my charges and how I have changed and why they should allow me to get my license. They said yes on the condition that I get an assessment done with their addiction specialist and do a probation period according to his recommendations. I have done that now and will be able to take NCLEX soon. Everyone has been helpful and nice during the process. Just be very honest and do everything in a timely manner. Don’t give up. You can do it !

Thank you for sharing I really do appreciate it ! If you don’t mind me asking were any of the charges a felony ? Mine was a felony because some one fractured their wrist and another fractured their ankle so it was considered GBI . I think with a misdemeanor I’d be able to get it but I’m unsure about a felony. Thank you !

Yes I had a felony and several misdemeanors. Nothing expunged!

@Jessica Prince

I'm facing the same thing and my biggest concern, as mine has been 10-years almost 11 for my felony DUI but my fear gets to me with being accepted for clinicals. Though I was told that the clinical agency tends to look at it as if the BON considers it then so do they and I've talked to the BON. I guess my question to you was what was your experience with getting accepted for clinicals? And thank you for sharing your experience

I had no problem with clinicals and mine was only 4 years ago! You will be just fine!

@Jessica Prince

Thank you. You know that roller coaster of faith. God has God has me. Oh my gosh they're going to think I'm a monster. No way they'll let me in. Back to God has me. ? Sometimes hearing other peoples stories provides that hope needed in our moments of weakness

He definitely has you! I stood on the promise of what doors God has opened no man can shut and you can do the same! Praying for you now!

@Jessica Prince

Yes! I have drowned out God directing me to nursing for YEARS. Trying to quiet his voice over and over again until I finally just said OK God. I DO trust you and you have never failed me. Thank you.
