RN here, been a nurse for 4.5 years and just started training in outpatient dialysis 5 weeks ago.

Im feeling pressured by upper staff, asking if I like it and will stay.  They told me you either love it or hate it.  I don’t hate it, but I’m not 100% sure I love it.

I know it takes a lot to train somebody for dialysis. And I understand they don’t want to spend all that time just to have me quit...

i really don’t know what kind of nursing I want to do long term. This job just kinda happened!

How will I know if it’s for me?  When?

i haven’t even started canulating yet...  hopefully next week...

but running a pod of 4 by myself seems overwhelming...

thanks!

I knew right away...the running of a pod of 4 by yourself takes anywhere from 6-8 months to get comfortable with.  Some clinics, a nurse takes a pod, but where I am, nurse does not take a pod unless emergency.  Just sit back, learn the job and let it sink in!

I don't know why they are bugging you.  It usually takes a full year for you to feel comfortable in dialysis.  That said, they need to let you finish your training before you decide if you like it or not.  The first several days on your own will be overwhelming but hopefully they understand that you may need extra help for the first weeks.  We try to ease our new staff into the full 4 patient thing by giving them 2 patients to start (once we are confident in skills) and progress from there.  I hope you decide to stick with it for awhile, and that they will ease off and give you time to decide if you like it.   It is usually us that decides that we don't want someone not the other way around!!
