Are there any forms of federal aid for nursing students? I was laid off and I think there is no time like the present to finally go to nursing school. This is something I have wanted for a while(I've been asking questions about it on this site since2006!) Do Pell grants pay for anything besides tuition, books, ect.. What about living expenses? Gas to go to school? ECT............ Also I live in Maine, anyone know of state programs for out of work employees to get some education. I have an appointment with our local community college advisor, but don't even know what to ask. Thanks

Federal aid depends on whether or not you already have a bachelors degree. If you have a bachelors degree then the only thing that you can get from federal is loans. But on the other hand if you dont have a bachelors and your income is low then you qualify for all the federal grants in addition to any type of grants that your school may offer. There is also work study and loans if you just want to have extra money

This is correct, but keep in mind that financial aid will go by your last yrs salary. So, you may not qualify for as much aid as you could. With that said, I was able to appeal my financial aid showing proof of unemployment in order to receive more money... Speak to the school. I am sure this is common for them.
