Hello,
I'm currently taking prereqs at BC.
I don't have any previous nursing experience.
Does anyone know if volunteering is necessary or strongly recommended (sort of like an unwritten rule) to be considered a strong candidate for the ABSN?
I'm trying to cover all my bases for my application later this year. FAU is my 1st choice school.
Thanks!

Short answer: no.
I was just accepted into the 2014 FAU ABSN program, and we were told that previous volunteer experience holds no bearing in their final decision. In fact, during the application and interview process, I wasn't even asked! So, no, you are not required to have any volunteer experience.
Quendi, thank you for responding! Congrats on getting in. What else can you share with respect to increasing my chances of getting accepted?
Grades....especially in sciences. Did you attend FAU prior to your acceptance?
Thanks again.
I did attend FAU for my undergrad and pre-reqs. I would definitely make sure you get a great score on the TEAS. Most people I talked to were 99th percentile, so there are some super competitive scores. Also, I would say try your best to get a 4.0 GPA in your pre-reqs. I had a 3.9, but I believe my BS and MS degrees in Biology really helped my application. Overall GPA should be over a 3.5, but is likely the least important of the three when they make their decisions. Good luck! :)
Get a 4.0 in my nursing prereqs...will try my BEST.
Score high on the TEAS...
Overall GPA should be over 3.5.....
Tall order because I am currently working full time, married, w/3 kids....but I'm up for the challenge.
One last question, how did you space your science prereqs? I have A&P I and lab, Chem I and Lab this summer.
Thanks again for responding.
Not a problem. I took A&P I and II with the labs last summer. I will say, if you are taking them over the full summer (at FAU they were offered back to back, 6 weeks each), you should be fine. If you are taking them separately over two different 6 week terms, you should be fine as well, but it will be a lot of work (tests every week, basically). If they are during the same 6 weeks? I would seriously reconsider, especially with work and a family. I talked to some people who were taking both during the first six weeks. They were not only overwhelmed, but their grades suffered for it.

I am currently attending BC as well and will be applying to FAU for 2015! Make use of the A&P labs in the library plus some of the teachers have their reviews posted on youtube. I am finishing microbiology then completing some of the other classes like sociology, etc. I should be finished my AA this year.
Thank you, KathleenPrice, for your two very helpful tips. Do you know if there is an AP lab on North BC campus? I'll have to check.
Thanks again!

My wife just completed both AP I & II w/lab, micro w/lab, chem w/lab and nutrition all online at regiionally accredited edukan.org. She did it out of DodgeCity CC. Classes are inexpensive, excellent and well taught. And she is now going to take the clep for Human Growth and Dev, Sociology and Psy. Just some ideas...
Sorry for the delay in responding ... they do have an AP Lab at North. It used to be in the library but I heard they were renovating and it is on campus now. You might have to ask around.
