Far-out JCAHO questions

Updated:   Published

Hi! If I haven't posting lately, it isn't because I don't love you guys, but my hospital is getting ready for the BIG ONE  (JCAHO, of course). Naturally we're all scrambling, and I need help from my Allnurse peers!:D What is the craziest, most far-out and unexpected question that any accrediting agency rep. has ever asked of you? I like to be prepared for the unexpected. Thanks for the help! (If I'm lucky, this may be a SHORT thread and I'll know that most questions are pretty logical). :kiss JeannieM

We just went through JCAHO and I sat in on many of the sessions. There weren't any far out questions. They were interested in team management. How did nurses interact with dietary with case management with social workers with PT and pharmacy et al. towards improving outcomes for the patient. The nurse surveyor was sharp as a tack, but very pleasant. The physician was tenacious in his chart review. But it really was very team oriented. We did very well by the way! Good luck to you! It makes for a long week.

I only have home health and hospice JCAHO experience and we only get questions about staff really knowing P&P processes....diseminating all that information is a huge job.

The Ultimate JCAHO answer is, "I don't know, but I know who does, how I can find out, to look in our P&P manual, etc.

We are by far the best unit in our rehab hospital. We got dinged for having dust on our defibrillator. That could be considered a good thing, no?

JCAHO will ask about your hospitals mission and vision statements, routine procedures, and Allison is correct in saying if you don't know the answer.....know who does........We got dinged on documentation issues.....so dot your i's and cross your t's.

The suits arrange for me to be on vacation when Joint comes. We had a priest who was in on a mock session and he was asked where they put documentation about patients being annointed. He said there is no specific place. A suits rep said, "Now Father, you know that isn't true!" And he said pointing to his collar "See this? I don't lie."

Why do we all get our panties in a bunch over this JCAHO stuff? It is such a scam anyway!

Most far out experince I have had with jhco was once during a survey ,the surveyor had asked several PCA's about disaster, specifically fire safety and fire procedure. For some reason, the fire alarms went off during that survey and guess who ran for the elevator? One hint;her name tag didn't identify her as one of ours. Now dosn't that make you feel safe?:chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

We just had a mock survey two weeks ago and the one question everyone stumbled with an answer was, "What do you do when or if you find your crash cart with a broken lock?" and "Who do you call after you've used your crash cart?" Most knew that the Pharmacy had something to do with it. :D They are also going to visit each shift so I hear. They've never visited the night tour yet at my facility, but betcha they will the night I'm on...

Never have seen one of them on night shift - another reason I stay there:D Has anyone else ever had them show up on nights?

jcaho is a pain.......they asked my facility if everyone knew how to check the crash cart, pain management, fire safety, lock up room & restraint policies......just picky little things.

Hate to tell all of you night shifters, but JCAHO will probably be around on your shift. We went through JCAHO last year, and they were there on 2nd shift, and I think 3rd's as well. Of course, at the time I was the 2nd shift supervisor, so I got the pleasure of showing the MD on the team around. Yeah! Actually, he was very nice to me and not at all condescending. He told my DON that I was very courteous and did a great job of showing him of what he wanted to see. The one thing my boss told me was never to volunteer anything to the inspectors. Let them ask for it. :D So, I just kept my mouth shut (which is no small task at times) and answered the inspector's questions, showed him what he wanted. The whole ordeal was about 30 minutes in length. :imbar

I got dinged in the army for having expired soap! Never thought of it.
