Falsifying degree at work....

Published

I have a problem with a co-worker who insists on using "BSN" when documenting when she has an ADN/ASN. Is this not falsifying a medical document?? She does not have a bachelor's degree nor is she currently enrolled in a bachelor's program. Anybody else ever run across a nurse like this??

I wonder if there would have been more of an uproar had it been a LPN signing as a RN. ;)

Yes, because their scope of practice would be entirely different. Not the case for an ADN RN vs. a BSN RN.

Maybe she has a Bachelors in an unrelated field? The scope is the same as is the board all RNs take so not so sure I'd make an issue of this either way. You can of course opt to report it if it bothers you so much. We don't sign with our degrees.

I sign RN,BSN with the encouragement of my NM. I work for the VA so we are encouraged to put our alphabet soup behind our names.

(Electronic charting prepopulates the information.)

Then wouldn't she sign with RN, BA or RN, BS? The only BSN I know of is a Bachelors in nursing.

oh funny... i googled bsn these are the other options. maybe this nurse is also a member of a basketball league in puerto rico???

(credit to wikipedia) bsn is a three-letter abbreviation that may refer to:

ok time for me to go to bed i'm getting delirious. but, seriously could the n in bsn stand for maybe natural health or nutrition? i would just ask the nurse "i'm thinking about going for my bsn, where did you get your degree?"

amusing finds.....however, when signing charting as an rn....bsn only means one thing.

When I'm just signing my name to documentation, it's FirstInitial LastName, RN.

When I'm trying to look "impressive" is when I add the alphabet to the end.

i used to play bassoon. and i have a bsn (the nursing kind.) maybe i should start signing as:

wooh, rn, bsn, bsn

:clown:

That's what she should do if her Bachelors is in another arena. I admit I was reaching a bit but thought maybe it would explain why she is including the Bachelors although she should still specify the degree appropriately even if that was the case.

Honestly, it's not my business to police who has a degree and who doesn't. Here, many people with BSNs sign with it. I don't check to see who has signed with what. If they are falsifying their docs somehow, it may come back to bite them but again, not my business. If they're RNs, they're RNs. If they want to convince themselves they have more, that's their problem.

If the OP is concerned, she should report it.

I too have electronic charting (5 different versions depending on what facility I'm at) and per our state BON, I sign:

traumarus, APN (and that's it).

I've never seen ANYONE sign BSN or ADN. Just RN. Advanced practice nurses might put MSN or NP, but otherwise why would anyone put their degree on their documentation?

Wishful thinking? I have no other explanation.
