Mar 14, 2006 DO YOU THINK THAT ALL NURSING STUDENT ARE TREATED FAIRLY BY FACULITY STAFF?Can you give us something to work here with? That's such an open-ended quote that just about anything said could be construed as an answer.

Mar 14, 2006 There have been stories here about insturctors where the poster said "they didn't like me for some reason and was out to get me". My answer would be from my experience yes. The insturctors were fair and consistent in how they treated us. But I know that's not always the case for everyone, there are plenty of examples that this isn't true.

Instructors are people and it is unrealistic and naive to think that everything and everyone is going to be 100% perfect all the time.No one goes through life or through nursing school without experiencing a few things that they question. It's unrealistic to expect otherwise. How we respond to life's challenges defines who we are. Respond well to whatever challenges you are facing now and you will be fine.llg

Instructors are human beings with biases and preferences the same as all of us. Although consistency and fairness should be an ideal they strive for. Also, students are created equally, we all come to the table with differing strengths and weaknesses needing different things from the instructors.

She said, "Not fair, I don't remember anybody dragging you kicking and screaming into the nursing program." She's right. We all chose to be here, and we just have to deal with whatever they throw our way.
rpbear 488 Posts Specializes in OB. Mar 15, 2006 We had an instructor that was so difficult and scary that we were terrified of her in clinicals. She rode our butts, she quizzed us in front of the pt, other students, and staff RNs. She made us do procedures with no notice to prepare, she changed pt assignments the morning of cliical, she made us redo care plans. This is why people were scared of her, we thought she was unfair compared to the other instructors. Guess what, she ended up being my favorite!!!! She made me a great nurse. I owe all my time management skills, my ability to think on my feet, my flexibility, and my critical thinking to her.So what you may see as unfair, my be one of those life lessons that bite us in the butt sometimes and make us better people. Roll with it, do what you have to do to get through and learn from it, you will be a better person because of it.

After clinical was over she ended up giving me a fantastic review and I thanked her for pushing us and making us go the extra mile...I learned soooo much from her! She replied by saying, im so glad you feel that way bc I sometimes still run into students who hate me 10 years later, they just don't understand I do what I do to make them better nurses". For that I am very thankful, I will be a better nurse becuase of her.

Mar 16, 2006 Instructors may not always seem like they are being fair, but you have to remember that they are dealing with a very diverse group of individuals who have very different ability and confidence levels. There are students in my class who always seem to get the easy assignments and the instructors undivided attention during the clinical day, while others (myself included) are given the most challenging patients and feel like we are left to figure alot of things out on our own. I am preparing to graduate and looking back I realize that my instructors must have seen something in me that made them comfortable enough to give me more difficult assignments and then let me function very indenpedently. It didn't seem fair at the time, but I am thanking them now!! I am going to be working in an ICU and feel very well prepared thanks in part to the "unfairness" of my instructors!
