Experienced RN new to oncology, looking for direction

Published

I am starting a new position on an oncology/telemetry floor at a VA Hospital in California. Very excited! I start in early January. I have 18 months experience working Medical-Surgical floor in a small rural hospital where things are very different. I also have 15 months experience working in a post acute setting.

Is there any oncology reading material I should review before starting? Any telemetry material? I've been reviewing EKG material online.

I would appreciate and recommendations from anyone!

Your best bet is to talk to your units best nurses. You’ll know who they are quickly. Ask them common medications you must know, common procedures you must know, common conditions you’ll run into. They’ll be able to tailor it to your unit. Otherwise master ACLS.

Thank you!

So just read through my ACLS book?

Go through the simulations multiple times. Memorize the ACLS drugs, dosages and indications. Known your crash cart

Join the ONS. They have many good resources about oncology. Many institutions also use ONS as a source of education (such as chemotherapy class, BMT class, oncology foundations) so it’ll be good to get used to the website.
