I will be doing my preceptorship in the ER and am wondering if anyone can help me with my learning experience. I know the ER is a busy busy place (to put it mildly) and i will not be able to learn or see it all. Can anyone give me some pointers on what i should try to focus on? I will be there for two days.
Thanx for any help

If you are only there for two days, I would think you would be doing a lot more observing and helping, rather than carrying your own patient load. Relax, use the skills you've learned this far and ask the RN who is precepting you lots of questions. Let her know what you are capable of doing, and i'm sure you'll stay plenty busy.

I had two days of clinicals in the ER a couple of weeks ago. I just teamed up with a nurse and let the staff know that I was happy to help wherever I could. They were wonderful. Over that two days I started two IVs, drew blood for labs 3 times, did a straight cath on a female, helped bring in a woman having tonic/clonic seizures, setup and ran two 12 lead EKGs, cleaned and bandaged knife wounds, and fetched warm blankets. If there was a procedure and time for me to do it, they grabbed me. It was great!
