Epi Pens

According to the State of Illinois, schools have the opportunity for free Epi pens as long as they have a doctors order on file for this emergent medication. I am new to school nursing and was curious how I would go about getting an order...

Our district has a school physician. He is a local doc and the school committee retains him yearly for sport physicals, consultations and things like that. Each year I hand him a short list of over the counter meds for him to sign. I work in an elementary school, so our standing orders are minimal. But the epipen is the most essential of all.

As it works in our state, to get free epipens the school physician writes an order for each school. I call his office and he just faxes me the orders. I mail in the order to the "EpiPens For Free" company and they send us free epipens. It is fantastic!

You probably have a school physician. He/she will write an order out as they know how expensive plus necessary.

Hope this helps....find out who your school physician is.

Do you have a medical advisor? That would typically be your go-to MD.

If you don't have a school doctor - we work through the county health department doctor.
