Nurse Entrepreneur Roll Call!

Nurses Entrepreneurs

Published

I would love to get an idea of what other nurse entrepreneurs are up to. Would anyone be willing to share what their business is? Even if you haven't yet implemented your business plan, I'd love to hear from you!

Please include what your business (or planned business) is, your location, how long you have been in business, and any other information that may be helpful.

Thank you!

I am getting ready to start my own House Calls practice in South Carolina. It will be a fee-for-service, so no insurance to deal with.

Few for service as in direct pay by patient? Not through insurance? Do you buy extra ?

Stay calm, stay humble and carry on...✌️

I would think its because of the support/know how. I believe its a moment where you have to "jump" and see where it takes you. People including RN's are more comfortable with the "paths already made" than to make their own. It involves risk and would be my opinion. I have been wanting to start a business and its been hard to come up with an idea. My initial is to start an adult day care center. But having worked in a Cardiac floor specializing in Heart Failure, theres so much room for improvement in the elderly/geriatric part of health care.

I've actually been wanting to start a business that can utilize my RN skills and give quality care the right way. One of which was board and care business, however, I believe they require that you own the house, and have a few months of emergency funds in the bank, etc. but reason why I'm interested in owning my own board and care is that I've seen too many horrible, dirty, poor living conditions that imo should have been shut down. I know what I want, but I have no business knowledge to get things started. As in tax, staffing regulations etc

Stay calm, stay humble and carry on...✌️

I am surprised by the lack of nurses who responded...I wonder if a lot of nurses shy away from business because they are truly not interested or because they don't have the support and/or know how.

Perhaps they are too busy running their businesses to respond on a social media forum with few of their peers as members. Check out Linked In, or even FaceBook. There are tons of nurses running businesses, including me. It is even possible that there are a higher number of nurse entrepreneurs than the general public. Entrepreneurship is only for a very small minority who can tolerate or even enjoy risk, have some business aptitude (or luck), and can either transition slowly away from a real job, or have financing.

The majority of small businesses fail in the first 5 years, that is too much risk for most.

hello Penniv,

I'm very interested in your idea. I've been working on a plan similar to yours. I'll be very interested hearing hows business coming along ?

With your business grant do your company have to be a nonprofit company?

I've been a nurse for 15 years and I love it. I've also styled hair since the age of 14 and I love that too. Lately I've been thinking about starting my own healthy hair salon. TN recently became approved to offer licensure for natural hair stylist, meaning no chemical use. The class is 17.5 weeks. I'll be graduating with MSN at the end of the month and have to decide what's next. What do you all think?

Hi Pfiesty - I'm interested in learning more about your numerous consulting roles? Especially any work in accreditation. Thanks!

I love being a Nurse Entrepreneur and went into biz helping others get started as it seemed so many just did not know how.

Good for you and way to go! Keep up the good work!

Hi All... Roll Call present. I am a recent graduate FNP (RN for 7 years) however, I was taken back down my entrepreneurial side after 1 week of practicing as an NP. 6 months ago... my non-medical home care business transitioned to CNA/Nurse staffing. We started with 0 Nursing homes ... today we are staffing 9 Nursing Homes as the primary agency. It's Alot of work... no sleep... stressful..... but in the end.. I have a feeling its going to pay off.

Awesome! Keep up the great work! Hang in there! Have you ever thought about starting your own NP clinic?

Good question Teacea, I believe may not know how or that it even exist. expand the horizon

That is why it is my passion to help Nurses unearth their talents and wrap up their knowledge into entrepreneurial dollars. The National Nurses in Business Association helps spread the word also.
