Employees that smoke

We just introduced a new policy. Anyone who smokes can not apply for employment. Do you feel that the new smoking ban takes away from the nurse personal life?

There are many threads on this subject. Just like there are many news and journal articles on the same. I don't smoke so it doesn't affect me other than the opportunity to work in a smoke free environment provided the rules are enforced.

If smokers object to the policy, they are free to work for other employers that don't (yet) have a similar policy. However, the trend is clearly in that direction.

This will also have an effect upon insurance premiums for the employer. Health insurance for non-smokers costs less. Smoke-free buildings cost less to insure (less risk of smoking-related fires). But, playing devils advocate .. the employer may incur extra costs to test potential employees for nicotine use &/or conduct spot checks on incumbent staff.

Now, if we could only prevent stinky perfumes/colognes as well!

Even as I whole heartedly support the right of each human being to choose their own time of death...obviously we are far behind many "enlightened" socities concerning the right to choose our own death...but...I do not feel I or anyone else should ever be exposed to poison not of our choosing...smoking? Im fine with banning it for the good of us all...

I think the membership is feeling hammered by the barrage of rapid fire questions and thoughts. I believe that the membership is trying to acquaint you with the sites features and the extensive threads that can broaden your research and thoughts about your questions. I too am confused who you are looking for or need as in one post you talk about nurses with mental health issues that should not be allowed to work yet in another thread you talk about your own struggles.

Are you a RN? I see you are an LPN and that you have been an administrator at a nursing school. You presently work at a facility that bans smokers? Is this an acute care hospital? A LTAC? A SNF? A clinic perhaps?

I think everyone is trying to get to know you.

Any smart professional would not disclose their identity because you never know who reads all nurse.com. Because I've worked to hard; I'm not going to put myself as risk by sharing my identity with strangers. Now if the threads are boring than I'm pretty sure adminstration will delete them, so either answer the question and keep on the topic or ignore the topics that I post.

Esme, our very experienced and respected administrator, is not asking you to disclose your identity. Any smart poster would know that in order to have intelligent discourse, you must have an exchange of information on both sides. Where are you coming from? What are your opinions? What has been your experience? What has prompted you to begin asking these questions?

Actually, I figure other members of AN ought to know what they're responding to before they respond. You flooded AN with posts yesterday on many topics that already exist--and that is no "dumb assumption".

Your posts are public. Anyone can respond. Please get comfortable with this concept as AN is a large and very diverse place and you will often get answers/replies that you may not like.
