Nurses week gifts from employer

Hi. I was just wondering what your ER management did for you for nurses week? Gifts, money, lunches!? Well my ER gave us a big fat NOTHING!! Management said "there is ER nurses week so we r not celebrating nurses week". Oh and week got a crappy coffee mug last year for er nurses week!! Ughhhj!!!

Anybody else think it's weird that nurses are rewarded with pizza parties and ice cream socials? Maybe a little child like?

We recently had some sort of survey to fill out at work. Any unit with 100% compliance would get a pizza party. As a professional, an offer of a pizza party does not hugely affect my decision to do, or not to do something.

There is also the issue of food and nurses. Many of the nurses I work with are overweight and eat compulsively. They try to eat healthy, but when junk is available, they eat it. And appreciation is shown to nurses by supplying junk food. Weird.

One day of the week, there was lunch for all "senior" nurses (5 years or more in the organization)....though the didn't seem to be checking if the nurses were indeed senior. Another day there was icecream for all hospital staff.

We got lunch/dinner from the ER docs, which I thought was very nice of them.

Wow, who would have thought there were so many people who felt they were "deserving" of gifts! In this day of decreasing reimbursement, high unemployment, and increasing numbers of people without healthcare coverage, I'm just thankful to have a job. No extra gifts needed. A sincere thank you is great. A manager who actually went to the effort to write out cards and attach a token - wow, above & beyond. Some of you need to grow up.

And here's the thing. What else besides a day of recognition are you willing to give up? Maybe a few less staff? Reduction in benefits? Being grownup also means not groveling just because you have a job.

Being thankful is not groveling. And yes, I might give up some things to help my hospital stay open, if it came to that. I've know people who worked for 20+ years at hospitals that have had to close. It was very sad for the staff and the community. I believe in being part of the solution, not the problem.

I guess I take the middle ground on this. I have a job, get a paycheck, etc....this is all I really want and don't expect to get anything more.

On the other hand, having a quality lunch for nurses was a nice gesture and I appreciate that, even though I would not have been heartbroken if they did much less or nothing at all.

A blessing on the hands (for caring and healing, of course)-which included...a chaplain pouring rosemary scented olive oil on my hands while she thanked me. Meanwhile I've got a code 2 SOB coming in and a belligerent 5150 to deal with.

Ever try to wash olive oil off your hands in a hurry? Thanks, hospital.

That's what I was wondering about...I've tried and the answer is no. Hopefully someone had some nice crusty bread around :)

Oh man, now I'm craving some sourdough bread with yummy olive oil and herbs! Thanks! Haha :)

This year we actually got a tote with our hospital logo. Of course every employee received one not just the nurses. If you were scheduled to work the day of the lunch, you received a ChickFilet box lunch.

Our laborists gave us cookies. Doctors- not even a Thank you. They celebrate Hospital week the next week and pretty much the same. Don't know about a gift yet. I just wish there was something strictly for the nurses not every employee. I guess I am selfish sounding.

It surprises me how many hospitals choose not to show their support of their staff during nurses week, but yet there are still funds made available for signs, or memos, etc... I digress. We did get lunch provided by our ED physician group one day. A cheese platter and veggie tray were provided to each unit twice during the week by the hospital, in addition to the generic (computer printed) thank you notes. I guess because of that we did get something, but we weren't given anything individually.
