I heard on a radio program that every person swallows up to 20 spiders a year in his/her sleep. They apparently crawl in and we chew them up and swallow them. I almost fainted when I heard this!!! :uhoh21:
UGH, I think I'm going to be sick.. :stone

"There was a nasty looking black spider attached under the fold of the vallucula at the epiglottis!"Anybody care to offer up a nursing diagnosis for this?

Ineffective individual coping!
I chalk that one up to urban legend. It helps me sleep at night.

That stupid song used to traumatize me as a little girl. And the pictures in the pop-up book were terrifying! I used to freak out anytime there was a fly by my food, because I thought I would die if I swallowed it. I wonder why we teach that song to kids? Another strange one I used to love:Nobody likes me everybody hates me Guess I'll go eat wormsLong thin slimy ones short fat juicy onesItsy bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms!

I loved "The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly" as a kid. Loved the illustrations - I'm not afraid of spiders though. I also loved "Jabberwocky".
Whenever my friend or I get to whining too much about our lives, we sing the "Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me" song. . . . . :) I've sung it to my kids too when they whine.
What about "The worms go in, the worms go out, the worms go in and out your snout. The little black bug with the beady eye, goes in your nose and out your eye. Your liver turns a mushy green and comes out looking like whipped cream" . . . . . . :chuckle

It looks like this thread had more of a psychosocial focus than a pathophysiological one. Interesting. It seems that even the "little things" in life can be a source of such anxiety and fear.-AS
I would have to look up the exact quote... but it is something like 80% of people fear spiders more than they do death....

A few years ago I saw some pictures taken during a patient upper endoscopy after he had been trying to siphon water from his water bed using as old garden hose. He was sucking on the hose to get the flow of water started and inhaled an ant nest! The doctor who preformed the endo said they were crawling all over the place.

You can find critters in almost any line of work...back in college (WAAAYY back) I worked at IHOP and used to have to chase cockroaches out of booths. The worst one was finding half a cockroach in a guy's omelette (no kidding). Needless to say, he was not charged for the extra protein...

Spiders aren't so bad. It's when a snake is in you that it's bad.
