I have an interview for the ED at NYP. I was wondering if anyone is familar with the ED. I currently work on the oncology floor in the hospital and am looking to transfer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Spent a day in clinical there - it rocks. Things of note: two bays, one usually used for trauma/more acute, butI think both can be used for the big stuff if needed. The nurses have tons of autonomy, and the CNAs were REALLY helpful, at least to us students. IIRC, the orientation is pretty long and you "float" to other units. I use quotes because it's not really floating, you just spend some time on other units as well, so you get used to all populations. On some days in the ED, orientees function as skill nurses, so you don't have a real assignment, but rather go around and start all IVs, caths, etc. Now, that may have been a specific new grad orientation, so I don't know if it would be the same for an experienced RN. The only real negative I saw was some friction between the trauma team and the ED staff. From the trauma surgeon: "You activated the trauma team, so WE'RE RUNNING THE TRAUMA!!!!!!!!!" Calm down, turbo, it's a drunk who fell down and bonked his head. :uhoh3: That may be a normal thing, I don't know. Overall, everyone who worked there seemed to really like it.

Thanks I am an experienced nurse for 2yrs and I currently work in the hospital. I am very excited about my interview and I wish to work nights. I am just afrain of the wierd people that u sometimes see walking into the ED. i know u only were there for 1 day but maybe u can answer some questions for me.........Do nurses get breaks routinely? WHat do the cnas do on the floor? do u know the nurse patient ratio? is it really stressful? how is the nurse manager?

Sorry to say I don't know the ratio or the NM...we just went down, asked for the charge nurse, and took off running. When I was there the CNAs were doing all the EKGs. I don't know other than that, bc they had us and an orientee doing skill stuff. Good luck!
