ER to Urgent care?

  1. Hello,

I am an RN with previous RN experience in an ER and I am thinking about trying urgent care.

Have any other ER RNs tried it, and did you like it?

One thing about urgent care - it would help with some of the cognitive dissonance and general dissatisfaction that can come with taking care of non-emergency (and non-urgent) patients in the ED. I think that's what gets to a lot of people - - the idea that you're gonna do a world class hustle and all the patient satisfaction stuff that goes with it for someone's sore throat...meanwhile you're also responsible for much, much sicker patients (or the staff working those areas don't have the help they should because half the staff is tied up with UC-type patients).

I feel like urgent care could more easily allow the nurse to take pleasure in helping patients in the correct (and much more reasonable) setting. And, when sick patients show up to the UC, you already have the skills to recognize that and know what care they need and how to get them to it.
