Elementary School kids and parent teaching on germs and skin

Hello, I am doing so informational teaching for parents/kids of grades k-4. I am sending home some things on germs and skin.

I am looking for suggestions and or websites that can further help me.

I am making an informational sheet on germs and on skin. I am sending that home so it needs to be for the parents and kids but also fun and not boring. I want the parents to actually want to sit and read it with their children instead of sticking it up with the other stack of papers.

Any suggestions would be great!

My mom used to use analogy when trying to explain to me things when I was little. Kids have great imagination, so I suggest to fascinate them with the story of why the Great Wall of China was built as an opening activity. The wall being the skin or the body's first line of defense and the Mongolian warriors who wanted to invade and conquer China (the human body) as the germs.

when my kids were in elementary school, i always used http://www.kidshealth.org.

you can click on "parents site", "kids site", or "teens site".

in the search box (on kids and parents site), i entered "germs" and came up with quite a few relevant hits.

I did this for one of my nursing classes. As an activity for the children and parents to do together, I had a "game" handout in their packet of info. Here's an example of the game. If there are 4 members of the family, have one person apply a very small amount of lotion to his/her hands, the other three people have clean hands. Sprinkle a small amount of green glitter into the hands of the person with lotion and rub hands together. Then shake hands with one of the other family members...That person shakes hands with the next person and continue down the line. Now everyone looks at their hands. The glitter on everyone's hands represent germs and how easily they are spread from one person to the next. Now have them try to rub the "germs" off with a paper towlel, the next person with just water, the next person with hand sanitizer and the last with soap and water. It is fun for children to play this game and really opens a lot of eyes to just how easily germs are spread and the importance of proper hand washing.

This is a great activity! I occasionally get the opportunity to teach a Safe Sitter class, and I sometimes do some sort of health activity in my kids' classes at the teachers' request. I am totally using this the next time! Thanks!
