Hello all, I am constructing a care plan for neonate normal AGA. For planning I wrote: Patient will maintain effective breastfeeding AEB: what should I put for AEB? Maybe -proper alignment and latch on by end of shift. This would be a short term goal. How about for long term goal? I appreciate any help!!

What are the indicators that a mom/baby couplet is nursing effectively?
What would you look for in Mom in terms of comfort, condition of nipples, condition of breasts, feelings of satisfaction versus frustration, adequate rest versus exhaustion, nutrition and hydration, etc?
What would you look for in Baby in terms of hunger versus satisfaction, sleep/wake periods, condition of the mouth and lips after nursing, adequate hydration verus dehydration, urine and stool patterns, weight, blood sugar (if indicated), etc.

Your goals reflect what your interventions would be, so what are your interventions?

Ditto what Jolie said. Also, baby's lips properly positioned on the areola (adequate diameter in the mouth), proper sucking technique (open-pause-close), and audible swallow. Also, what does mom state regarding her feelings about how nursing is progressing? Confidence is a big one, esp with first time moms or those who have not been successful nursing a previous child.
Do not mix interventions or goals for the mom with the neonate if the care plan is for the neonate.
