I thought I would share my success story with the BRN. I was seeking licensure in the state of CA but extremely worried about being denied licensure due to a past DWI conviction. I received my DWI 10 years ago when I was 18. My BAC was around .16 if I remember correctly.

I sent the BRN 7 letters of recommendation. Two from professors, two from past employers, two from nurses I precepted with, and one personal reference. I also spent a lot of time on my letter of explanation.

My recommendation is to do everything they ask and more. Get as many letters as possible (the people who write the letters must mention your past conviction in the letter) and write a really good letter of explanation.

You must also get all your court documents and your arrest report from the police department. That is paperwork from TWO agencies. I only sent them paperwork from the court house and that wasn't enough. This ended up delaying the process.

I sent in my application in on March 1st, was told I needed to send in the extra paperwork in June. I was told they would not be taking action against me on July 29th. I could have saved myself a month of waiting time if I had known to send in the paperwork from the arresting agency.

If you have any questions, I am here to help. Don't give up!
