Dual certified NPs doing (NNP) Neonatal & (WHNP) Women’s Health - OB/GYN?

Published

Are there any dual certified NPs doing (NNP) Neonatal & (WHNP) Women's Health - OB/GYN? If so, what educational route did you take? I see Neonatal specialty choices for NP college programs, but none for Women's Health - OB/GYN.

What an interesting topic. It's something I've considered doing in the next 10-15 years (either WHNP or CNM). I shadowed a midwife in a clinic and on L&D while in school to do NNP and it was a lot of fun.

To answer your question, no I've never heard of anyone who has this dual role. I imagine it would be very difficult to practice in both areas at the same time since NNPs & CNMs generally work all kinds of different schedules that aren't "set" for the most part and WHNPs usually have clinic hours. If you want to do NNP and WHNP, you generally just choose to do one of them and then do the other as a post-graduate certificate.

It would probably be easier to do NNP first and then WHNP next since there aren't as many NNP programs around and your schedule as a student for NNP will be very unpredictable while doing clinic hours. Please keep me posted if you decide to do something like this; would be very curious how it turns out for you.

There are a number of programs out here in CA that are dual CNM and WHNP; not quite what you're looking at but thought I'd mention it

My long term career goal is an NP (NNP and or WHNP) or CRNA - Nurse Anesthetist. One of my past PCPs (primary care physician's) were dual certified in Internal Med & Peds. That made me wonder if an NP can be dual certified. I know I love "Mother/Baby", Nursery, High Risk OB/GYN. I don't know if I will like L&D or Critical Care (ICU, CVICU, PACU). The Critical Care working exp. is a prereq for CRNA school. Still researching the job market in my area for my NP area of interest. Time, shadowing, & working exp in those areas will tell. Whichever one I pick, I plan to work that specialty area as a BSN for 5 solid years first.

We have dual certified NPs, but they are peds and NICU. Have you worked in a NICU? If you aren't sure about critical care you might like peds better and be in the normal newborn nursery or WHNP :) Good uck!

Hi. Regarding Women's Health - OB/GYN, I've worked on the Mother/Baby Postpartum unit (LDRP), High-Risk OB/GYN unit, in the nurseries for both units, and in OB/GYN offices. No NICU work exp. yet. Dual certification in Peds & NICU makes a lot of sense. Thanks for responding.
