Im SO confused. Im in my 3rd semester out of 4 in BSN program. Psych teacher said that anti psychotics (typically/1st gen) mainly affect the D2 Dopamine receptors. And it blocks the receptor site...Well I thought Dopamine made you feel euphoric? So why would blocking dopamine receptors help a psych pt regardless if they had schizo or not? This really applies to anything like with pro kinetics some block the serotonin receptor so why wouldn't that make. you more depressed??

Dopamine is connected with motivation and interest, among other things.  Too little dopamine depresses motivation and the ability to find things interesting and that could cause flat affect and depressed mood. Too much dopamine makes a person psychotic. Notice how psychotic people over connect stuff, and take too much interest in things that are irrelevant: for example thinking everything has a special meaning, the tv is talking to them specifically, etc.

Does this help?

Dopamine has an effect on other functions  too, like voluntary movement.
