Go to work early to case it? I'm about to go in 15 minutes earlier than usual to see if a certain patient is STILL there. That way i can avoid having that patient. I think that it is awful to have to do that. But, this certain patient and their family is so unrealistic and time consuming. I know that i am not the only person that does this.

Yes, I've done this before, to avoid strangling that patient during my shift
On the other hand, if I know I'm only going to be there one night and then off a few days before I'm back again, I'll "take one for the team" by purposely taking the annoying patient.

We don't really have a choice in who we care for unless its a true conflict of interest.

I work in a nursing home and I have the same residents every day. I will go in 10 to 15 minutes early just so I can get a feel for how wild the day will be. There are days that you walk in and you can feel the wildness in the air. Those are the days when I walk outside before my shift to take some nice deep breaths. Also to say a quick prayer that my shift goes as smoothly as possible.

Patients are assigned on our unit unless you request not to take care of someone. I understand the need for self-preservation too.
I sometimes take a quick walk around a unit before work to feel the "vibes".
If I see relaxed nurses sitting at the nursing station finishing up charting, that tells me lots about how the night went.
If I walk in and everyone seems to be in the room with the crash cart parked outside, that tells me more.

I am always 20-30 min early for my shift. I think it's just my OCD (just joking :) ). I work LTC, but I like to look at the census, read up on the report since I was last there, make a quick round. I also count all the carts, so that my co-workers can make the CNA assignments (hate doing it), and get all of our carts set up for the day. For me, doing all that makes my day go sooo much smoother.
